  • ???? How do we define juice quality & authenticity????? The composition of juices can vary depending on region, climate, and natural factors, but certain statistical patterns help define their characteristics. That’s why the AIJN Code of Practice was developed - on a voluntary basis - to provide reference guidelines and other useful documentation for assessing the quality, authenticity, and identity of fruit and vegetable juices in the European market. At AIJN, we continuously update these standards to keep them relevant. This month, we’ve introduced four new updates to our Reference Guidelines: ?? Lime??? ?? Strawberry??? ?? Acerola??? ?? Sour cherry??? Want to learn more? Let’s connect!??? Drop us a message or visit AIJN’s website for details. #AIJN #CodeOfPractice?

  • Healthy, sustainable, and affordable foods: what role do fruit juices and preserved fruit and vegetables play?? Yesterday, AIJN, in collaboration with PROFEL (European Association of Fruit and Vegetable Processors), organised a breakfast event at the European Parliament to answer this question and to explore how fruit juices and preserved fruits and vegetables contribute to healthier and more sustainable diets. With around 40 attendees, it was a fantastic opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations at the beginning of the new EU mandate.? We’d like to thank MEPs Herbert Dorfmann and Christine Schneider for hosting the event and for their insightful contributions. MEP Dorfmann emphasized the importance of fruits and vegetables for a healthy diet, especially given that their consumption in Europe still falls below WHO recommendations. He highlighted the need to ensure that European farmers receive a fair income to guarantee the long-term supply of fresh produce. MEP Schneider spoke about the importance of clear, inclusive labelling systems and highlighted how education can empower consumers to make healthier, more informed choices. ????? We were also joined by experts Professor Javier Gonzalez from the University of Bath and Betty Chang from European Food Information Council (EUFIC). Professor Gonzalez underscored the key role that fruit juices and preserved products play in promoting healthier diets, while Ms Chang shared valuable research on consumer awareness, showing that, despite their many benefits, misconceptions still exist. Continued education is critical to improving public understanding of these products. ????? We also appreciated the presence of Mauro Poinelli from European Commission, DG AGRI, who stressed the importance of ongoing communication and research to help consumers better recognize the full value of fruit juices and preserved fruits and vegetables.? As consumers face growing economic challenges, fruit juices and preserved fruits and vegetables offer an affordable and nutritious solution. These products provide essential vitamins and minerals in a convenient, easy-to-consume form, with the added benefit of retaining much of their nutritional value and being available year-round.? Thanks to everyone who participated in making this event a success. ???? We look forward to continuing the conversation and advocating for healthier, more sustainable food options for all. ????

  • Yesterday, the AIJN Regulatory and Technical Committees met in Brussels for highly productive sessions.??? The Regulatory Committee, led by Justine Pradels and chaired by Reuss Heinrich, began by reviewing the latest developments in EU legislation, along with discussion on European Parliament hearings with Commissioners-designate. The main focus of our meeting was on the Fruit Juice Directive and the Packaging & Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). Over the past few months, the committee has been working on providing feedback on both files, making sure that the fruit juice sector is informed and aligned with EU policies. The AIJN Manifesto was also presented, laying out the association's direction for the next five years, aiming for a healthier and more sustainable future. The Technical Committee, led by Christina Charmpi and chaired by David Marquenie, covered several important technical matters. The committee reviewed updates from the Code of Practice Expert Group, focusing on revisions to the reference guidelines for various fruit juices. There was also a discussion around the ongoing collection of heavy metal data, blueberry data, and Brix values for fruits like orange, grapefruit, and passion fruit. Thank you to all our members who joined!???
