Yesterday marked the conclusion of the Spring edition of our Transforming Healthcare with AI course at MIT Sloan Executive Education! Many thoughtful questions and ideas were exchanged over the course of these two days: Where can AI be most effective in clinical settings? How much does interpretability/explainability matter? Where is the regulatory landscape headed for AI in health? We are grateful to our participants for their contributions and we look forward to hosting the Fall edition of this course in October ?? ?? After overcoming #BreastCancer herself, Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Regina Barzilay took action by applying #AI to #mammography to improve early #cancer risk detection. Her groundbreaking work at MIT Jameel Clinic spans #NLP, drug discovery, and AI-driven #diagnostics, transforming how we approach #healthcare. Her pioneering contributions to #MachineLearning and #ComputationalMedicine continue to shape both #technology and human health. Congratulations to her on her 2025 IEEE Frances E. Allen Medal, sponsored by IBM, for innovative machine learning algorithms that have led to advances in human language technology and demonstrated impact on the field of #medicine: https://lnkd.in/easfY8MJ #AIForGood #IEEEAwards2025

Nearly 50% of spinal neurosurgeons have reported operating on the wrong vertebra at least once in their careers due to the difficulty of differentiating between individual vertebrae in an X-ray ?? A process called 2D/3D registration has emerged as a promising approach to preventing such errors — before a patient enters surgery, a 2D X-ray must be aligned with a 3D image like a MRI or CT scan to determine the spatial relationship so the surgeon can properly operate on a patient. However, aligning the two images can be challenging, leading to the rise of a variety of machine learning approaches to resolve this issue, but these approaches can fall short when processing each patient's unique anatomical features. Vivek Gopalakrishnan, Neel Dey, David Dimitris C., Andrew Abumoussa, Anna Larson, Darren Orbach, Sarah Frisken, and MIT Jameel Clinic PI Polina Golland introduce xvr, an automatic framework for patient-specific X-ray to Volume Registration. Their more personalized approach not only outperforms previous deep learning approaches, but also mitigates potential out-of-distribution failures. ?? Synthetic gene circuits now allow scientists to engineer particular biological functions to interact with other stimuli, leading to a particular cellular response. But when these circuits are introduced in new cellular contexts, their behavior can be unpredictable. In a Review for Current Opinion in Biotechnology, Sebastian Palacios, Ph.D.,?MIT Jameel Clinic Life Sciences faculty lead Jim Collins,?and Domitilla Del Vecchio discuss how machine learning could address the challenge of unmodeled interactions, enhancing synthetic gene circuit engineering. ? While microscopy has come a long way, a careful balance must be struck between speed, image size, light damage, and clarity when it comes to imaging delicate biological tissues ?? Even though deep learning has emerged as a possible solution for clarifying low quality/noisy images, realistic hallucinations in predictions can have disastrous consequences in both scientific and medical applications. In a new paper published in Optica Optics Express, Cassandra Ye , Jiashu Han, Kunzan Liu, Anastasios Angelopoulos, Linda Griffith, Kristina Monakhova, and MIT Jameel Clinic PI Sixian You are the first to demonstrate an uncertainty quantification technique to indicate the algorithm's level of confidence in an image denoising prediction. They combine this technique with adaptive acquisition rescanning, so only certain parts of an image where the algorithm's prediction has low confidence will be rescanned, reducing the amount of light exposure that could potentially damage an entire tissue sample. ?? MIT Jameel Clinic PI Elazer Edelman is co-Guest Editor for this month's "groundbreaking special issue" of the Journal of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography & Interventions (JSCAI) on the role of AI in cardiovascular health. "AI is now an integral part of our daily lives, whether we are prepared for it or not. In medicine, particularly in interventional cardiology, its impact is profound. From image processing and diagnostic support to risk assessment and procedural decision-making, AI has the power to enhance precision, improve outcomes, and democratize expertise across the field." — Elazer Edelman ?? Feeling itchy? Chronic itching, a.k.a. pruritis, is an itch that persists for 6 weeks or more. The condition currently affects 13% of the US population, profoundly impacting sleep and quality of life while resulting in an annual population-level expenditure of over $90 billion. In a new paper, Michail Ouroutzoglou, Mingmin Zhao, Josh Hellerstein, Hariharan Rahul, Asima Badic, Brian S. Kim, and MIT Jameel Clinic PI Dina Katabi propose using a machine learning approach combined with radio frequency signals to develop an objective measure for quantifying itch, which may help develop more effective treatments as current self-assessments make it challenging to quantify small changes over longer periods of time. ?
