How might your work survive well beyond your time? When it comes to the writing systems of cuneiform and hieroglyphs, their work is literally written in stone. Come with us on this two-part workshop on the history of early written communication and the ways we can communicate our messages well into the future. Join the University of Michigan Kelsey Museum of Archaeology’s Mallory Genauer as we walk through the methods and examples of some of the first written communications. Apply these lessons as we discuss iconography, symbology, and graphic signifiers and the way Graphic Designers use them in daily practice. Then try your hand at your own inscription as we work in clay at Sugar Hill Clay to make tablets, mementos, and records that will last well into the future. A big thanks to the Bloomsbury Design Books team and Louise Baird-Smith for believing in the project and me as a writer. I have a lot more folks to thank, but for now, read more about it below and keep an eye out for it on shelves in 2025!?#designbook #designreads _______________________________________ Want to begin taking on freelance design projects, but you’re unsure of how to start? Maybe you’ve looked at a few resources on building a design business, but their advice seems too big, overwhelming, or out-of-reach for what you’re hoping to achieve right now? If you’re looking for freelancing basics, truly for beginners, to give you the confidence to take on your first few independent projects, “Designing For Local Communities” is for you. “Designing For Local Communities” encourages the reader to find their first clients in their local community. By working with small businesses, the designer can build a freelancing portfolio, while simultaneously investing in their neighborhood. Lessons are tailored for working with these small-scale clients, with examples, interviews, and exercises that will build a strong foundation for an independent design practice. Dispelling the myth that you must live in a big city or work for huge brand clients to be considered successful in the design industry, Meaghan Barry celebrates the benefits of working directly with small businesses and non-profits, building value for designers and the businesses on their doorstep.
