So excited to share my very first academic article, "Integration of the national HIV curriculum in medicine, nursing, and pharmacy programs in the United States", has been published in BMC Medical Education! In the midst of madness, last week’s #CROI2025 conference had lost if exciting updates about long-acting HIV prevention and treatment. Ironic and tragic that just as we are poised to deliver the newest innovation with approval of injectable lenacapavir for PrEP expected in June that could dramatically impact the epidemicl, the US administration is pulling the rug out from under the whole ecosystem—in the US and internationally. As concern grows?that the Trump administration plans to announce drastic changes to the #CDC—such as the elimination of the Division of #HIV Prevention—HIV activists from across the country are meeting in Baltimore this Friday (March 21) to map out strategy for an uncertain future. “How do we build this umbrella campaign through this inside game of engaging with legislators on the Hill in D.C., but also at local and district meetings?” says Maximillian Boykin, campaign manager of Save HIV Funding, outlining the meeting’s agenda. “I think another big thing is engaging an outside game—what types of actions do folks want to be able to take? There is a history of that within the HIV movement.” “It's important for us to think about the long game,” said John Peller, president and CEO of AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC) and one of the meeting’s organizers. “Here we are in the second month of the Trump administration, and we are seeing before our eyes the destruction that’s being done to communities, not just here at home, but globally.” https://lnkd.in/gPMwzd3U

Last week, I was so pleased to join Sofia Gruskin, USC Institute on Inequalities in Global Health, EngenderHealth and Sexual and Reproductive Health Matters in a conversation about Advancing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights: Moving Forward post-the 2024 US Election. Politics have always had an outsized effect on SRHR issues. There is nonetheless room to catalyze a new generation of SRHR protections, advancements, and legal reforms. The panel explicitly considered this political moment and discussed areas to push forward, lines to hold, and opportunities for global solidarity in SRHR." “We’ve got to snap out of any paralysis or any disbelief or shock, and we’ve really got to look at what needs to be built in the future," our ED, Mitchell Warren told The New York Times today in response to pressure from the new administration to transfer CDC HIV prevention efforts to HRSA, which has limited focus on prevention. “One of the biggest tragedies in all of this would be if we let this narrative be written entirely by people who don’t understand science or health care or research or foreign assistance,” he added.
