Happy ?? HEARTS ?? Day! On this day, we reflect proudly on all that our organization is doing to protect young hearts. Pictured here is the amazing volunteer squad from our most recent achievement, our free heart screening event offered on February 1st in collaboration with Simon's Heart, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia/Youth Heart Watch, Jefferson Health and Cardiology Care for Children as part of the first annual National Youth Heart Screening Day hosted by Parent Heart Watch. Our event, which screened over 185 young hearts in the Norristown community, could not have been possible without the generosity of our volunteers and support from donors like you! As a result of our ground-breaking efforts to provide EKG and echocardiogram testing not otherwise offered to children and teens, 7 youth were recommended for followup evaluation, 2 with potentially significant cardiac issues. Nationally, 1 in 300 youth is identified with potentially life-threatening cardiac conditions during screening events. Nearly all of these conditions are treatable, but none are detectable with a stethoscope. It's critically important to know what to do when someone has a cardiac arrest-- even at work. Last week, we held our first Lunch n' Learn Hands-Only CPR training program to improve outcomes for cardiac arrest victims in the workplace. Led by our student Heart Heroes from our Youth Leadership team, we partnered with Good Fellowship Ambulance & EMS Training Institute and headed to Philadelphia to train 8 employees from the operations department at GSK. Our incredible students did a wonderful job of educating the participants and helping them practice the simple skills needed to save a life. We are grateful to GSK Operations Manager Lynda Stroyek Lerch for inviting our team to her company to train her department. Do you know where the AED is located in your workplace? Does your company have a plan for responding to cardiac emergencies? Are people trained in CPR and how to use an AED? Those first few minutes are most critical, and while calling 911 is absolutely the first step, the difference between life or death is usually determined before emergency responders arrive. ?? Our latest CPR training was conducted by two of our Heart Heroes, Kaushik & Anthony, who both possess a deep passion for saving lives as evidenced by their EMT & CPR certifications. Kaushik is a senior at STEM Academy and has been accepted to Drexel University’s accelerated medical program, and Anthony recently certified his high school’s?teaching staff in Stop the Bleed ?? We are so proud of these youth for taking initiative in empowering their community with invaluble knowledge— and this is just the beginning of their journeys!??
