“Have you been eating your fruits and vegetables?” ?????? - A 10 year study from Yale Cancer Center explains why Skin Carotenoid Status (SCS) was suggested as a promising biomarker for health. Carotenoids are natural pigments that give fruits and vegetables like carrots, spinach, and tomatoes their bright colors. They are important to our health because they act as antioxidants, which help protect our cells from damage. The researchers used a technique called Resonance Raman Spectroscopy (RSS) to measure carotenoid concentrations in live tissue. This tool shines a light at a specific frequency that causes carotenoids to reflect the light in a unique way. By analyzing the light that bounces back, scientists can figure out how many carotenoids are in the skin. “Reflectance spectroscopy” is also used in devices like the MIMOSA Pro and pulse oximeters, but at different frequencies to measure different things. Both non-invasive and fast, the study found that the amount of carotenoids in the skin is a good indicator of how many fruits and vegetables a person eats. This live tissue/skin test may offer more a reliable result than a blood test because it doesn’t fluctuate. A patient will need to improve their diet/change their lifestyle and maintain it for 2-3 months to start seeing considerable improvements in their SCS scores. #preventivehealth #patientcompliance #diabetesprevention

Had a great time this past weekend at the Yale New Haven Health Wound Science Symposium! We heard from some wonderful speakers and were able to learn about some new products around the industry during break times. It was very refreshing to hear our healthcare leaders highlight the root causes of disease as primary topic of discussion! Preventive health awareness, inflammation, antimicrobial stewardship, utilizing the stem cells from our fat, the correlation between wounds and gardens, HBOT and all of its potential applications.
