📢 India’s UGC Tightens Rules on Foreign Degrees: Franchise degrees not to be recognised This probably has gone unnoticed, but it carries a significant impact for UK TNE providers in India. The University Grants Commission (UGC) of India has introduced new regulations to streamline the recognition of foreign academic qualifications, promising a 15-day processing timeline. However, degrees obtained through franchising arrangements will not be recognised. This development has significant implications for UK higher education institutions operating in India. Franchise arrangements, where Indian colleges deliver UK curricula and award UK degrees without substantial student mobility, are now explicitly excluded from recognition. Key Takeaways: Franchise degrees awarded by UK institutions through Indian partners will not be recognised in India. Only collaborative programmes involving student mobility (e.g., twinning, joint, or dual degrees) are eligible for recognition. UK providers must reassess their transnational education (TNE) strategies in India to ensure compliance and maintain credibility. This policy shift underscores India's commitment to more in-country TNE models.
