Register to attend our Keynote Speaker: Timothy Hawk, FAIA, AIA National Treasurer https://lnkd.in/gu-SbQ23 Building client trust and understanding is critical to success during the conceptual design phase. While digital software tools are highly effective, three dimensional electronic models and drawings are most effective and appropriate during the development phases of a project. These realistic and immersive experiences provide detailed design representation and allow clients to understand spatial characteristics, lighting, and material application. During the conceptual phase, however, it is critical to use visualization tools that allow the client to comfortably engage in critical review of the many design iterations. Quick sketches, pen and ink drawings, and watercolor washes are easy to produce and help build quick understanding. They can even be completed over a lunch or in a meeting while discussion is occurring. But, hand drawing is often not taught in architecture schools, and emerging professionals enter the profession with limited ability to convey their early concepts and ideas. This presentation will introduce techniques and tips that architects of all experience levels can use to develop these skills. ? Participants will learn about equipment and materials that are foundational to success, and learn how digital tools can be used in tandom with hand drawing to construct wire-frame underlays. Three case studies will illustrate how pencil sketches have accelerated design sign off and built client confidence in the design team’s direction. These sketches will be presented with final images of the space so participants can see how thes sketch may have informed the design process. ? Techniques and rendering styles will be discussed, and the impact on client collaboration will be reviewed. This portion of the presentation will help the architect recognize that there are a wide variety of sketch techniques and each style should be matched to the goal of the presentation. ? The impact of drawing on design thinking will be explored. Often, the act of drawing allows the architect to explore design options and quickly consider the validity of concepts. Sketches also help the architect consider technical challenges which may impact the design direction or be logged as a detail that needs to be addressed as the project develops.
