Last week, Simona Fischer, Veronica Karr, and Joon Ta took the stage at the AIA Minnesota A’24 MN Conference on Architecture to give a presentation entitled “Ethics of Forced Labor in the Building Material Supply Chain: Developing a Mitigation Framework.” Their session shed light on the critical issue of forced labor in building material supply chains, introducing a mitigation framework and practical resources to empower design professionals to identify and address these risks in their specifications.

Last week I had the privilege of moderating the 2+2 Program at the A’24 Minnesota Conference on Architecture. The 2+2 is an annual conference program hosted by AIA Minnesota's Committee on Design that brings together recent AIA Fellows and recent recipients of the Young Architects Award to present work and discuss a common theme. This year’s theme was “Design for Discovery.” We had a great panel this year with Fellows Eric Amel, FAIA & John Pfluger, FAIA as well as Young Architect Award winners Laura Eder (Foster) and Kyle Palzer AIA, CID, NCARB, LEED Green Associate sharing their work, experiences and knowledge. The panelists covered a broad range of interesting and thoughtful commentary on the topic of Design for Discovery, and steps that we can take as a profession and as an industry to continue enhancing our work moving forward. #A24MN

According to the 2024 Minnesota Principal's survey, a staggering 94% of principals agree that student mental health challenges pose a significant barrier to learning. They believe these challenges stem from “student trauma, social media engagement, and the struggles of caregivers.” As designers, our work in educational environments can play a significant role in addressing these challenges. Cuningham’s Hailey Wrasman and Allison Mastel are at AIA Minnesota’s Conference on Architecture this week, presenting the firm’s research on trauma informed design principles, and how associated design strategies offer a lens through which learning environments can reduce harm for occupants and provide support for students, staff, and their communities. Learn more about the fundamentals of trauma informed design, and how it is helping Cuningham create a more uplifting built environment that supports healing, empowerment, and well-being for all: bit.ly/3K3YWrj
