#UBuffalo's Vice President for Research and Economic Development Venu Govindaraju participated in Maryland's State and Academia AI Summit in Annapolis. Hosted by Maryland Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller, Dr. Govindaraju joined leaders from the Maryland Department of Information Technology, Maryland state government and colleagues from The Johns Hopkins University, United States Naval Academy, University of Maryland Baltimore County, Morgan State University, University of Maryland, Towson University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Bowie State University, Coppin State University and Salisbury University. “Our goal is simple: get the best, most brilliant minds in the same room and admire the innovation that culminates from speaking face-to-face,” said Lt. Governor Miller. The day-long event included productive discussions surrounding strategy, brainstorming sessions, and small group workshops, culminating in an exercise that helped state leadership and leading academics find practical opportunities to collaborate now and in the future. Hollywood calls upon #UBuffalo computer scientist Siwei Lyu! Lyu, SUNY Empire Innovation Professor of Computer Science and Engineering | University at Buffalo who co-directs the Center for Information Integrity | UBuffalo, served as an unpaid consultant on the upcoming film “G20” starring Viola Davis. “Their main purpose involving me was to ensure technical accuracy when they show the generation of deepfakes of the U.S. president,” Lyu shared. “I introduced the background of deepfakes, the general workflow?of using AI models to make deepfakes, and important terminologies such as training data, generative models, model training, machine learning and more."
