At Health Data Summit 2025, ?organised by The European Institute for Innovation Through Health Data on March 18–19 in Brussels, Stelios Hadjidimitriou, PhD, Senior Research Fellow at the Signal Processing & Biomedical Technology Unit - AUTH represented AI-PROGNOSIS and chaired the session: “Trustworthy AI in Digital Health: From Guidelines to Practice". During the session, Stelios Hadjidimitriou, PhD: ?? Presented how AI-PROGNOSIS laid the foundation for developing trustworthy AI tools for #Parkinson’s disease screening and care, by establishing a comprehensive framework for both AI development and evaluation. ?? Gave an early preview of the Parkinson's disease risk assessment tool the project is co-creating with key stakeholders, relying on known risk markers and wearable-collected measurements of mobility and sleep in daily life. ?? Was joined by other Horizon Europe projects — TRUSTroke, STRATIFYHF EU Project, and iPROLEPSIS — who also presented how they are working on trustworthy digital health tools solutions. The project aims to develop, validate, and prospectively evaluate AI systems for the automated early detection of chronic disease risk factors in women with breast cancer by using routine CT images. This paper written by Andrea Tocchetti and his colleagues, looks at different challenges in ensuring the reliability and safety of artificial intelligence systems. Despite the remarkable capabilities of AI, issues of robustness – meaning how well these systems perform in unpredictable situations – remain a significant barrier to widespread use. ?? Prof. Maarten de Vos from KU Leuven explains how AI and digital biomarkers can improve #Parkinson’s disease care. Currently, Parkinson’s is often diagnosed and monitored through periodic checkups, which may not always reflect the changes in symptoms over time or the unique experiences of each person with the disease. By using everyday tools like smartphones and smartwatches, AI-PROGNOSIS aims to collect real-world data that helps with earlier diagnosis, more accurate assessment of symptoms, and better prediction of how the disease will progress. These digital biomarkers allow for continuous monitoring, offering a more personalised approach to care. The final goal is to validate these AI models, provide evidence of their effectiveness, and work with patients and clinicians to integrate them into real-world practice. After all, creating models is not enough; they need to be used in everyday healthcare to truly make a difference.
