A heartfelt THANK YOU to the 300+ attendees who joined us for the A.I. in L.A. Innovation Summit yesterday! ? In September, Governor Gavin Newsom signed AB 2876?which requires K-12 schools to teach students about Artificial Intelligence. As a result, schools are moving to incorporate AI learning into math, science and history-social science curricula.? ? This Summit paved the way for how K-12 and higher education systems can work together to collaborate with industry to identify how to prepare students with the Generative AI skills they will need regardless of career path they choose. ? We want to also offer a huge thank you and gratitude to keynote speakers Jen García and Dr. Terri Horton, EdD, MBA, MA, SHRM-CP, PHR and our sponsors for making this day possible, including: Grand Canyon University HourTable KPMG The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation UXD Academy? I received my 3rd hackathon win! ???? On October 12-13, I attended the inaugural Cerebral Beach Hacks, LA’s largest GenAI hackathon hosted by AI LA. In 12 hours, my team and I built Baymod, an AI-powered, content-aware moderation tool designed to detect early signs of grooming, bullying, and harassment ??? I’m happy to share that we received the 1st place prize for the Cybersecurity: Reinventing Digital Defense track! Motivated by child safety concerns on platforms like Discord and Roblox, we developed a Discord bot as a proof of concept for an LLM-based system that analyzes linguistic nuances to moderate online conversations, reducing the burden on human moderators. If concerning behavior is detected, Baymod takes action by warning the potential perpetrator, notifying a moderator, and initiating a check-in conversation with the potential victim. I learned: ? how RAG works and how to implement it using LangChain ???? ? the value of scalability, transparency, and customization when building a product to help solve an issue as important and volatile as online child safety ?? ? how to quickly craft branding that aligns with the product (inspired by Baymax!) ? ? that it’s actually possible to get a decent amount of sleep during a hackathon weekend ?? Thank you to: ? Meryl M. and Maxine Wu for being great teammates and my fellow ACM at UCLA buddies ?? ? Kindo for offering advice on our project and generously awarding us with AirPods and 1-year subscription to Kindo Pro, including WhiteRabbitNeo ?? ? the AI LA team for organizing this hackathon and bringing the AI community in LA together for a weekend ?? So grateful for this opportunity! Check Baymod out on Devpost: https://lnkd.in/g2R7ghgt P.S. I’ll be at the upcoming MIT Policy Hackathon from November 15-17! If you’re in the area and want to meet up, let me know :D

Check out the AI LA #ResponsibleAI event review from LA #TechWeek! Next up is the inaugural #ResponsibleAIReadingGroup hands-on learning seminar tomorrow: https://lu.ma/seminar. I hope to see you there! ;)
“Many people worry about, ‘Would this AI replace our job?’ And if not, what is the best way we can actually be smarter than the AI?” That was Amy Tong, CA's Secretary of California Government Operations Agency, who spoke at our #LATechWeek event, Responsible AI - Made in LA. She stressed California's commitment to building AI literacy among employees and communities, and that preparing workers to engage thoughtfully with AI is essential not only for jobs but for broader public safety and responsible innovation. Amy was part of our esteemed panel of California industry leaders in finance, academia, startups, and government - CEO of Employ CA Jen García, UCLA's Sarah T. Roberts, Ph.D., and Kareem Saleh, CEO of FairPlay AI- who are paving the way to innovation, fairness, equity, and safety in AI. ??Other key insights: ? CA is piloting AI solutions for the 2028 Olympics traffic management (CA Gov Ops) ? A new "ecosystem" model is being piloted in SF to connect AI startups with underserved communities and CA government agencies (Employ California) ? Financial services are leading responsible AI development and adoption to adhere to its inherent regulatory requirements and to support equity in loans and borrowing (FairPlay) ? We have an opportunity to address bias and equity issues by amplifying and valuing the perspectives of those historically overlooked in tech development: mainly women, people of color, and other marginalized groups (Dr. Sarah T. Roberts) https://lnkd.in/gCbShd4M #AIEthics #AILA #ResponsibleAI #LAtech
