What happens when you give an AI more time and space to think? With Claude 3.7, we’re starting to see the answer. Extended Thinking Mode works by giving the model permission to allocate more cognitive resources to tough problems, without changing the model itself: more “thinking tokens,” more reasoning steps. And it makes a measurable difference. On math problems, accuracy improves logarithmically with the number of tokens. On the GPQA benchmark, dense with physics, bio, and chem questions, Claude hits 84.8% with a parallel reasoning setup, with a Physics subscore of 96.5%. These gains didn’t come from training a bigger model. They came from test-time compute scaling: letting the model generate multiple lines of reasoning, then using a learned scoring function to pick the best one. A kind of internal debate, carried out in parallel. Claude 3.7 can also navigate operating systems, solve open-ended tasks, and play Pokémon. Not as a gimmick, but as a real-world proxy for what agentic AI looks like: planning, adapting, revising strategies, and staying focused through tens of thousands of interactions. Earlier models get stuck at the beginning in Pallet Town. Claude 3.7 beat three gym leaders. The deeper insight here is not just making AI models bigger, but figuring out how to give them room to think, and how to evaluate what that thinking looks like in action. One of the hardest things in agent-based AI isn’t making decisions. It’s knowing when to slow down and double-check them. Anthropic’s new “think” tool gives Claude a structured space to pause mid-task and work through the information it already has. Not just before answering, but right in the middle of complex tool use, where outcomes depend on careful sequencing and policy rules. This small shift improves how the model handles uncertainty, checks constraints, and avoids cascading mistakes. In policy-driven domains, even a short pause to sort through the details can change the outcome. Think of it like giving the model a notebook. Sometimes the act of writing things out is what makes the reasoning click. For developers, implementation is straightforward.
