Domestic UAS Security and C-UAS Expert: U.S. Government and Industry Collaboration and Coordination
When is Part 108 and Sec. 2209 going to be released by the FAA? I highly doubt we will see either of these new regulations, via NPRM, this year or in the next four years. Executive Order 14192 establishes 10-out, 1-in regulatory creation requirement. Given the current stress on the aviation system and the federal workforce, it is unlikely these two new rules are of such priority the FAA would be willing or even able, to remove 10, let alone 20, to establish either or both regulation(s). For those waiting on either Part 108 or Sec. 2209, I recommend you look for alternative solutions. The good news is that there are creative ways to operate within the current regulatory environment. It’s just a matter of understanding all regulatory pathways and policies to implement those regulations in order to fully leverage what is available. The economic impact of game delays due to drone overflights is becoming staggering. Are we, as a society, in a place in which future stadium designs will need to account for drone threats? At DSS, we believe the answer is, absolutely. As with cyber security, network designs have to account for cyber threats. Architecture and infrastructure designs will need to account for the drone threat.

Prison contraband drops via drones is one of, if not the most, blatant use case of illicit drone use in the domestic environment. While there is plenty of focus on the "what could" happen, we recommend re-directing some of that focus on the "what is happening" with respect to modernizing physical security strategy.
