A first-ever conceptual model developed by ASC Associate Director Wendy Yang explains the variation in agricultural nitrous oxide emissions. The new “cannon model” reveals how soil nitrate, dissolved organic carbon, and soil moisture cause different parts of flat agroecosystems to emit varying amounts of nitrous oxide. The model will help scientists more accurately measure and predict N2O?emissions, and ultimately provide valuable data to farmers hoping to reduce their emissions?through climate-smart practices. https://lnkd.in/gW7FNuaN Liberal Arts & Sciences at Illinois School of Integrative Biology, University of Illinois

Congratulations to Agroecosystem Sustainability Center Director Kaiyu Guan, who was among six researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, who have been named to the 2024 Clarivate Analytics Highly Cited Researchers list. The list recognizes researchers and social scientists who have demonstrated exceptional influence, as reflected through their publication of multiple papers frequently cited by their peers during the last decade.?https://lnkd.in/g_GjYGSf

Congratulations to our director Kaiyu Guan, who was selected as the American Society of Agronomy?(ASA) Plenary E.T. and Vam York Distinguished Lectureship?at the ASA annual meeting. The international annual meeting, which this year is November 10-13 in San Antonio, is the largest gathering of soil, crop, and agronomic scientists in the world. https://lnkd.in/gNJaMQqn

ASC Director Kaiyu Guan gave a keynote address at the The Conference on?Computational? Methods in?Water?Resources (CMWR) in Tucson, Arizona. Kaiyu spoke about ASC's work on field-level hydrology modeling and unifying scientists from the earth system science and agricultural research to address grand challenges in food security and environmental sustainability. https://lnkd.in/dSwS7aMA

“We have always collaborated, but now we are doing collaboration with a capital ‘C.’” The words of Carl Bernacchi echo through the mission of vision of ASC. Read more about his impact in our latest scientist feature. Over the last two decades, he has helped build the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign from a "photosynthesis powerhouse" to "accelerating its global profile with regards to ecosystem-scale processes, from mechanism to remote sensing to satellites." https://lnkd.in/gUJ8qn6S

ASC is exciting to announce that the local USDA local Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) plans to allocate resources, which run through 2031, to Agroecosystem Sustainability Center researchers to ramp up studies to improve greenhouse gas estimates of agricultural practices, as a continuation of U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) ARPA-E's SMARTFARM effort. https://lnkd.in/dY_SC-CU

Congratulations to ASC Director Kaiyu Guan, who was named one of 18 finalists for the prestigious @Blavatnik National Award for Young Scientists. The honor is sponsored by the Blavatnik Family Foundation and the The New York Academy of Sciences. Guan is a Professor of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences in the University of Illinois College of ACES and the Institute for Sustainability, Energy, and Environment (iSEE). He was one of 331 nominations from 172 institutions in 43 states. https://lnkd.in/daufRacD

Congratulations to ASC Director Kaiyu Guan and Bin Peng on their latest research findings published in Nature Communications ( https://lnkd.in/d_AMnjgc), which, for the first time, provides accurate, high-resolution predictions of carbon cycles using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and supercomputers to measure the amount of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions from every individual farm at the national scale. The project was funded by FoodShot Global and Foundation for Food & Agriculture Research.
Imagine a technology that could give farmers an accurate, quantifiable picture of their individual farm's #GHG emissions... Now imagine what that technology could do for the reporting and verification services in the ecosystem service markets. A new FFAR-funded study led by researchers at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Agroecosystem Sustainability Center and University of Minnesota shows how AI & supercomputing can do just that! FoodShot Global Follow the link in the comments to learn more about this 1st of its kind technology that could be a game-changer.
