Another fantastic Sustainable Agriculture Conference organized by Carolina Farm Stewardship Association wrapped this last weekend! A real honor and joy to present on collective land ownership with Thomas Beckett, Annette Hiatt, Jean Theron Willoughby, and Helena Cragg. Many thanks to all who make this annual event possible; it's a real inspiration every year.

"The pressures that separate us have a common root: our tendency to cast people and groups in irreconcilable terms – or the process of "othering." This book gives vital language to this universal problem, unveiling its machinery at work across time and around the world. To subvert it, john a. powell and Stephen Menendian make a powerful and sweeping case for adopting a paradigm of belonging that does not require the creation of an "other." This new paradigm hinges on transitioning from narrow to expansive identities – even if that means challenging seemingly benevolent forms of #community-building based on othering. "As the threat of authoritarianism grows across the globe, this book makes the case that belonging without othering is the necessary, but not the inevitable, next step in our long journey toward creating truly equitable and thriving societies. The authors argue that we must build institutions, cultivate practices, and orient ourselves toward a shared future, not only to heal ourselves, but perhaps to save our planet as well. Brimming with clear guidance, sparkling insights, and specific examples and practices,?#Belonging without Othering?is a future-oriented exploration that ushers us in a more hopeful direction." The devastation wrought by Hurricane Helene is heavy on our hearts. Our Commons Manager Nathan Galaviz was working with our team out of state and just returned home to Western North Carolina. While thankfully his farm and home were spared the worst, the hurricane's impact across the region can't be overstated. Yesterday, we texted with Nathan to make sure he got back safely. He gave permission to share his reply: "Long story... I'm in Charlotte organizing supply drives back home. Everybody's wanting to help and we have folks from around the country coming in this week with trucks, chainsaws, and heavy equipment to get people out and supplies in. The need for supplies and relocation is massive. Remote mountain areas (my people in Bat Cave, NC) have been without water and supplies since last Wednesday. I'm in touch with the regional volunteer fire departments to get supplies in and people airlifted out. Working with 3 feed distributors and the NC Dept of Ag to get feed and hay to ranchers with livestock left. Search and rescue keeps finding people. We can't hear from people who are injured and trapped, buried under mud... I used $2500 of my own $ getting supplies in. Working with several local groups to get big donations drops to the hard to reach areas." // HURRICANE HELENE RESOURCES & RECOVERY // Give Now: Hurricane Helene Response Fund via Organizing Resilience, housed at Amalgamated Foundation - https://lnkd.in/erXacPSV Give Now: BeLoved Asheville - https://lnkd.in/e8ecd78k More info and groups providing support - https://lnkd.in/gfipiP-k Agrarian Trust's team has spent the past week checking on friends, family, and farmers in areas impacted by the hurricane across the Southeast. We hope you'll join us in supporting recovery efforts as people and communities work to rebuild, relocate, and reestablish their lives and livelihoods. There are so many ways to amplify, support, and donate if you're able. To everyone on the ground providing shelter, water, food, and medicine, thank you. More support is on the way! Hurricane Helene left devastation across the Southeast and Appalachia after making landfall in the Big Bend Region of Florida as a Category 4 hurricane last week. Storm surge and high wind speeds left destruction along Florida’s west coast, and rainfall records were broken along the storm’s path, with western North Carolina receiving some of the highest rainfall counts—more than 30 inches in some places. More than 100 people lost their lives due to the storm. We’re hearing from farmers in our network how dire the situation is in western North Carolina. In Asheville, where some of the worst flooding occurred, people are experiencing limited access to food, water, electricity, and cell phone service. Most of the roads into and out of Buncombe county are inaccessible, and many farms in the area have sustained major crop damage and are underwater. We have resources listed below for people impacted by the storm who are looking for disaster relief, as well as ways to support people who were impacted by the storm that we encourage you to contribute to. —— Hurricane Helene Aid: https://heleneaid.com/ Ways to Donate to People Impacted in Western North Carolina: https://lnkd.in/e9xu6qJz Hurricane Helene Relief for Southern and Central Appalachia - Appalachian Voices: https://lnkd.in/e87iUSue Hurricane Helene Farmer Relief Fund - RAFI-USA: https://lnkd.in/ekDCjXKj Resources for Helene Response and Relief - Carolina Farm Stewardship Association: https://lnkd.in/e3idQume
