Yet, another study highlighting that impact of social isolation on mortality could be as or more pronounced than serious illnesses such as heart failure and stroke. This study in JAMA explored the link between social isolation and mortality among U.S. adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Researchers used data from the Health and Retirement Survey (2006-2022) to assess 1,241 participants with COPD, aged 51 or older, for their level of social isolation and subsequent mortality. Social isolation was measured through factors like marital status, living arrangements, and social contact, with a score of three or higher indicating isolation. The study controlled for various factors, including age, gender, race, education, depression, and tobacco use. Results indicated that participants with COPD who experienced social isolation had a 35% higher risk of death compared to those who were socially connected, with a lower median survival time and five-year survival rate. The mortality risk associated with social isolation in COPD was comparable to that seen in severe health conditions like heart failure and stroke. The researchers emphasize the need for interventions to combat isolation, such as pulmonary rehabilitation, support groups, and community-based activities.
