Effective April 4, researchers at institutions in China, Russia and other "countries of concern" have been blocked from accessing numerous controlled-access data repositories (CADRs) maintained by the U.S. National Institutes of Health. The affected CADRs contain data on cancer, Alzheimer's disease, mental health disorders, substance abuse, adolescent brain development, and other topics. Researchers at the U.K.'s universities of Bristol and Cambridge developed a quantum communications network capable of transmitting data over the more than 410 km (nearly 255 miles) separating the institutions. The network uses encryption keys concealed inside light particles and distributed entanglement. The April Tiobe index of programming language popularity showed Kotlin, Swift, and Ruby all dropping out of the top 20. Insider risk management firm DTEX said the worldwide infiltration of companies by North Korean nationals extends to roles outside traditional IT. The company estimates North Korean operatives have infiltrated thousands of critical infrastructure organizations. DTEX's Mohan Koo said the company is involved in active investigations of 7% of its customer base, which includes Fortune Global 2,000 organizations. ACM has named Torsten Hoefler of ETH Zurich the recipient of the 2024 ACM Prize in Computing for fundamental contributions to high-performance computing and the ongoing AI revolution. The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has announced the selection of its fifth algorithm for post-quantum encryption. The HQC algorithm will serve as a backup for ML-KEM, the main algorithm for general encryption. HQC is based on different math than ML-KEM, which could be important if a vulnerability were discovered in ML-KEM. NIST plans to issue a draft standard incorporating the HQC algorithm next year, with a finalized standard expected in 2027. https://lnkd.in/ekaFzbdb

Researchers at European cybersecurity service provider Tarlogic Security said they had found undocumented commands in the ESP32 microchip made by China's Espressif, used by over 1 billion IoT devices as of 2023, that could be leveraged for attacks. The researchers said a backdoor in the ESP32 microcontroller "would allow hostile actors to conduct impersonation attacks and permanently infect sensitive devices such as mobile phones, computers, smart locks or medical equipment by bypassing code audit controls." #backdoor #microchip https://lnkd.in/gwuU7yrf

The European Parliament Youth Survey found 42% of European 16- to 30-year-olds get news about politics and social issues primarily from social media platforms. According to the survey, TikTok and Instagram are the most trusted platforms among 16- to 18-year-olds, while Facebook is preferred by 25- to 30-year-olds. However, those between 25 and 30 are more likely than those aged 16 to 18 to get news from online press platforms and radio. https://lnkd.in/gMj-4_Aq
