    John Ellis said yesterday on the new Clubhouse call “All Things Acquisitions” posted by Frank Knox and Todd Caputo this: “ You can have the best operational processes, marketing, pricing, and location of any dealership in your area, but without the right amount, and type, of inventory, it's all in vain.” This is evidence by Carmax going from 60+ thousand used cars to almost 100,000 used cars from December 2024 to February 2025. They have the best processes pricing and locations across the US, but they know more than anyone they need the right amount of inventory volume and inventory segmentation to win. So do you.     Many of you have seen the Anderson Economic Group, LLC estimates of the per-car cost of the proposed #tariffs on Canada and Mexico and China. This is a visualization of these estimates, using data presented at the Automotive Press Association webinar last Friday and cited in a The Wall Street Journal editorial that earned a rebuke from President Trump. As The Detroit News columnist Daniel Howes noted today, "Buckle up, Detroit, because it's likely to be a rough ride." https://lnkd.in/esR2X7wV This graph is for a set of North-American-assembled vehicles, including at least one from each of the following OEMs: GM, Ford, Chrysler, Honda, Toyota, VW, BMW, Kia, and Tesla. Because of the sensitivity of the issues involved, we identify each vehicle by its type only. The Wall Street Journal entitled their editorial "Trump’s Tariffs Will Punish Michigan; A new study shows how the levies will damage the U.S. car industry, even as the economy slows and uncertainty spreads." https://lnkd.in/eBKwANeu At $4,000 a car and up, a tariff war with Canada and Mexico will affect jobs in Michigan, as well as Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri, Texas, Ontario and northern Mexico. Base data include AALA data and other industry data. AEG presumes that not all content is tariffed and that some allowance is made to avoid double-tariffing goods that are cross-shipped. There is significant uncertainty regarding the application and timing of tariffs. We note that those analyzed here are not yet imposed, could be delayed, and will likely be changed. We also note that manufactures will adjust production in an attempt to minimize the tariff costs, and such adjustments will probably lead to stopping production of certain model line-equipment combinations.

    A The Wall Street Journal editorial says bluntly: "Trump’s Tariffs Will Punish Michigan." It cites Anderson Economic Group, LLC estimates of the heavy costs the tariffs would add to each new car. However, the President says this thinking is "sooo WRONG." The Wall Street Journal writes: "A new analysis by the Anderson Economic Group examines the potential tariff damage. Start with auto prices. The study estimates that a 25% tariff on the U.S. neighbors would increase the cost of a full-size SUV assembled in North America by $9,000 and a pickup truck by $8,000. The cost of an electric-vehicle cross-over would increase by $12,200. Canada is the biggest supplier to the U.S. of nickel, a key critical mineral in lithium-ion batteries." https://lnkd.in/eBKwANeu What we call "American" cars are built by workers in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Texas, South Carolina, Alabama, and California, as well as Ontario and Northern Mexico. Since the 1960s, we have integrated North American manufacturing of automobiles, to the great benefit of both workers and consumers in America. It's one of the reasons we have automakers such as GM, Ford, Chrysler, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai BMW and Tesla building cars here. Putting big tariffs on those cars will definitely increase costs, reduce sales, and therefore reduce American auto production jobs. Thus, I'm puzzled by the President's post on Truth Social, complaining about "...today’s Editorial that my Auto Tariffs will hurt the Michigan Automobile Business. They are sooo WRONG, in fact, it is just the opposite. The tariffs will drive massive amounts of auto manufacturing to MICHIGAN, a State which I just easily one in the Presidential Election." https://lnkd.in/er8x8iyv This isn't a hair-splitting question about how much of the tariffs would get absorbed by producers and how much would be borne by consumers. The costs per car are too big to hide. That's why Ford's CEO Chris Farley said the proposed tariffs would "blow a hole in the auto industry." Either we're correct, and adding government tariffs to the costs of cars will increase the cost of cars, or we're "soo wrong." It's not a small question.
