It was great to visit one of Ageto’s projects at the Puerto Rico Family Institute, a headstart school and resiliency center, where the 98% renewable microgrid has been operating reliably while disconnected from the LUMA grid. The microgrid allows the school to invest more in education and programs.

How is Aqunion reducing energy costs while producing 560 tonnes of abalone each year? “Our tailored approach focuses on creating a microgrid which leverages the synergy between solar power and energy storage to deliver both reliability and cost efficiency,” says Johan Wolmarans, Senior Energy Storage Specialist at SPS. The setup includes a battery-based energy storage system designed to deliver up to four hours of backup power and a solar array capable of supplying about 22% of Aqunion’s required annual energy. “The microgrid controller coordinates all the functions for all the generation sources on-site to keep the site running and to provide energy security to Aqunion.” adds Johan. With the implementation of SPS’s renewable energy solution, Aqunion anticipates a significant shift in its energy consumption profile. “We expect to see our energy costs decrease over time and our reliance on renewable energy increase from 10% to 30%,” Rowan Yearsley, CEO of Aqunion comments. Last month, Manley Hot Springs had a remarkable achievement! After just 2 months of commissioning, the community's electric system is now powered solely by solar energy and batteries for up to 13 hours a day—no diesel required. This milestone is a huge step forward for sustainable energy solutions in Interior Alaska, paving the way for a cleaner, brighter future!

This last week we were able to watch another remote Alaskan village utilize solar and energy storage along with the Ageto ARC microgrid controller (commissioned by Ageto rockstar Justin Williams ?? ) to have the generators fully turn off for the first time since having power in that village, in fact they were able to keep the generators off (80 hours) more than on (77 hours) during the entire week! ?? ?? ?? ?? Village electrical Load (orange) met 100% of the time?? With these types of systems the ARC controller integrates the solar and storage to offset the diesel generators, even running renewable only (shown below) when conditions allow. ARC controls all assets (PV, generators and energy storage) so that the batteries seamlessly take over the load, keeping the lights on for the villagers without even a flicker.
