Self Help Africa Malawi takes advantage of the 2025 World Water Day conference held in Blantyre to disseminate findings from the climate risk assessment in Thyolo to share knowledge and recommendations for improved WASH resilience in disaster hot spot areas. My colleagues Ulemu Gondwe and Caroline Melody Kawala shared findings from a climate vulnerability assessment in Thyolo at the 2025 World Water Day conference organised by the Malawi government through WASAMA The study was led by University of Bristol in close collaboration with Self Help Africa and Ministry of Water and Sanitation with funding from Co-op through The One Foundation in order to better understand climate related WASH risks for an effective response and resilience building. The conference provided an opportunity to disseminate the findings including how SHA Malawi is implementing recommendations from the study to improve WASH resilience in both WASH and non WASH projects. We believe the study results and knowledge shared will help influence the sector at large to integrate and build resilience in WASH programming in order to achieve uninterrupted WASH services when natural disasters such as cyclones and mudslides strike. ‘While trying to solve complex societal issues like water security, the necessity of collaborating far outweighs the benefits of working alone.’ Water for People India has made collective action as its central tenet in achieving #SDG6 by 2030 and has been collaborating actively with civil society organisations, market actors and various government departments at district, state and national levels. We? welcome this initiative by Agenda for Change to create space for dialogue, cross learning and joint action on the approach of systems strengthening starting with IRCWASH, WaterAid, Welthungerhilfe (WHH) and Water For People for co-creating this agenda for bringing about large scale structural change in the #WASH sector. We look forward to sharing our learning by working with a multitude of partners across various states and countries as part of this collaborative. One of the highlights of this week was the follow-up planning session, supported by our Global Coordinator Bethlehem Mengistu, for the emerging Agenda for Change country collaboration in India. It was inspiring to engage with our members about what a collective effort can achieve for the sector in India. These formative stages of collective action are crucial, as they allow us to interrogate our collective value proposition, identify both tangible and intangible assets, define a shared vision, and think about what makes for a sustainable and durable initiative. And of course, we are also keeping the tough questions in mind. Ahead of the meeting, collaborators analyzed their organizational investments against key systems building blocks, assessed their geographical footprint and overlaps, and began drafting a ‘Charter’ to guide and structure their collaboration. In a time when systems thinking and collaboration have never been more important, it’s reassuring to see our member-led scaling of our mission into new countries. Exciting times as we move forward with this important work! Thank you to Shiny S.
