    It’s almost retreat time…

Five years ago, I sat around an Airbnb with a handful of guys. Agency owners. Family men. Guys committed to their marriages, their faith, their teams, and their clients. We were at a marketing event but kept wishing for more moments like those Airbnb conversations. One guy joked: "We should just make our own event." So I volunteered as tribute. "I'll do it. I live in Florida. Everyone likes visiting Florida." And just like that, Agency Builders Retreat was born. Year one? A couple dozen attendees. A lot of laughs. Cost me thousands more than we made. But everyone left asking, "When's next year?" Honestly, I wasn't planning on a "next year." But the interest was there. So we made it happen. Year two. Then three. This week? We're kicking off year FOUR. Nearly 100 agency owners and leaders. Gathered on beautiful St. Augustine Beach. Sharing stories, trading ideas, building relationships. Our mission? Not just hitting 7 or 8 figures, or a certain team size for bragging rights. Not chasing burnout or empty success. We're chasing freedom. Purpose. Impact. We believe: Collaboration beats competition. People over pixels. Healthy families and businesses go hand-in-hand. Profits fuel meaningful impact. That's what being an Agency Builder means. I can't wait to get things started this Wednesday night. (On a pirate ship!) If you're missing out this year, no worries—next year's retreat dates drop soon. But don't wait to connect. We'd love to have you in the online community. It doesn't have to be lonely at the top.

As a marketing agency or consultant, there are 2 words you say all the time that frustrate potential clients (to no end)... ?? ?? ?? "It depends." How much will a new website cost? - It depends. How long will it take to see results? - It depends. What channels should I be running ads on? - It depends. When new clients hear this (very common) answer, they're thinking: I don't know what to expect. I can't give that answer to my boss. Haven't they done this before? So...what should we do instead? Well, it depends. (just kidding ??) For real though. If you want to go from "it depends" frustrating & turning away potential clients (& turn it into a phrase that makes them WANT to do business with you)...here are 3 simple steps: 1) Follow up those 2 simple words with *what it depends on.* 2) Let them know the contributing factors that change the cost, timeline, expectations, etc. 3) Then ask if you can pose a few clarifying questions to give them a much better answer than "it depends." Now, you'll demonstrate deeper expertise (& likely been able to bring up a few other client examples along the way). Plus, you'll be able to better qualify the situation based on their budget, timeline expectations & overall needs. Everyone wins. Much less frustration. And maybe a few new clients. #B2B #marketing #sales #agencylife #agencygrowth btw...we're talking about all these sorts of things in the Agency Builders community where agency leaders are swapping notes (& the occassional referral) in our Slack community. • We all know the trap—more clients means more staff, more overhead, and less flexibility. But what if there's a better way? In this live session with Conduit Digital, you'll learn: ?? Why the "more clients = more staff" equation is killing your agency's profitability ?? The exact framework for determining when to hire vs. when to outsource ?? A proven process for vetting and onboarding white-label partners that deliver results ?? Real success stories from agencies who've broken the hiring cycle (including our own journey) Turns out—you don't need to scale your team to scale your revenue. Let's show you how. #B2B #agency #digitalagency #agencylife #agencygrowth #growth

Thanks for the 10X Agency Growth: Secrets to Scaling from $1M to $10M webinar, Logan Lyles. Great to learn from Bonsai- excited to learn more about their agency management tool. My biggest takeaway is the shift from a transactional to a partnership mindset. Our new CEO, Ray Cameron, has been pushing the focus on alignment with our client company goals. It's a WIP! Thank you!

Losing a client almost WIPED OUT their agency... ?????? This is exactly why I've heard many agency veterans (like Jay, Drew & Karl) recommend keeping a close eye on the % of total revenue taken up by your largest client(s). If they leave--it could be disastrous. This was *almost* the case for Michael Davern & the team at Incept. 3 pieces of advice he shared for other agencies: 1) Don't let one client take up nearly 50% of your revenue, as they did. 2) Don't ignore your contingency plan. Make sure you're taking steps before they decide to leave to backfill that revenue. 3) Don't brush off early warning signs. Just because a new client is willing to write a big check (or multiple checks!), doesn't mean they're a good, long-term fit for your agency. Are their expectations in line? Can you establish a healthy working relationship? If red flags appear, don't shove them back down! What would you add to this list? #B2B #marketing #digitalagency #agencygrowth #agencylife btw...thankfully Michael & his team lived to tell the tale, including how they survived the loss of a MAJOR client and what they're doing differently now. He shared the whole story on the Agency Builders Podcast this week (link to the full episode below).

I've baked this question into my "rapid fire" round of the last 2 podcasts I've hosted: Who's 1 person who's had a BIG impact on your agency journey? Here are 5 reasons a similar question could be valuable for your podcast: 1) It Builds Community At Agency Builders, our mantra "Collaboration over Competition" is part of how we've built a (very fast-growing) community of peers who are willing to support each other even when they may be competitors in certain scenarios. Brining this aspect to our podcast just made sense. 2) It Creates Shareable Moments If you host/produce a podcast, you're undoubtedly pulling clips to share on #LinkedIn (or at least you should be). But finding those moments is often a time-consuming task (I still think most AI tools leave a lot to be desired in the clip identification task). So, if you're short on time, create a few recurring moments you can *always* pull out, and this question creates a nice personal moment that's great for that. 3) It Reaches Beyond Your Network While my previous point is true, this question specifically is even more shareable, because (a) it's a moment your guest will be likely to share, because it's very natural & non self-promtional & (b) your guest can easily tag the person they mentioned in the clip...providing even more opportunity for 2nd degree connection sharing. 4) It Helps You Find Other Guests If someone in our industry has had an impact on our guest's career journey, it's likely they'd have a great story to tell & insights to share on the podcast as well. So, this question has actually lead to very natural new guest outreach & great follow up episodes for the podcast. 5) It Helps Create More Content With the question I mentioned above, it also gives us the option to round up ever 20-25 answers into a fun list like, "Agency Leaders You May Not Know, But Should Be Following" What would you add? #B2B #marketing #podcasting #growth #agencygrowth #digitalagency btw...this clip came from last week's GREAT conversation with Linda Hafstad where she mentioned Derek Shaw on the Agency Builders Podcast. Highly recommend you give her a follow (& check out our full conversation linked below).
