    Pro-Aging Writer/Speaker/Advocate, and Learning Designer

In a recent interview with a teacher/author who started writing poetry in his 70s, the interviewer emphasized the guy’s age a couple of different times—asking, for example, “… at the age of 75—why?” The writer had already been focusing on wisdom and insight, in prose, for decades. Is it so odd that he’d turn to a slightly different approach? The more sensible question, I’d think, would be “Why not?” What’s the correct age to become a poet, anyway? Besides, as another poet* famously asked, “What is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” *Thank you, Mary Oliver #100WordsOnEverydayAgeism https://lnkd.in/gVFTdedj

I got to spend a whole hour with Loren (Executive Career Strategist) Greiff talking about all things age (but mostly about the dangers of age lables)! Loren does a fantastic podcast called Career Blast in a Half and I'm honored to be invited. Here's how the convo went down... https://lnkd.in/db6yG7-z

"Boomer," "Gen X," "Millennial" -- arbitrary labels have 0 scientific basis. Yet we use them daily to dismiss, categorize, and stereotype people born during a random year span. The cost?? > Innovation stifled.? > Talent wasted.? > Workplaces poisoned. Over the next 10 years the demographic will shift (longer lives, fewer births) will expose this charade. The winners will be those who see people, not labels. In this fierce conversation with Sheila Callaham We break it down: ?????? ?????????? ?????? ?????????? ???????? The arbitrary boxes that assume people think identically because they're born within 15-20 year span. We don't accept this for race or gender – so why tolerate it for age? ?????? ?????????????????????? ???????? ????????? Leaders remain oblivious to the facts We're all living longer while birth rates plummet. The talent pool is shrinking, but organizations continue discarding experienced workers. ?????? ?????????????????? ????????????????????? Employers can now measure how "future-ready" their company is through employee perceptions (link in comments) What can you do about it ? Listen here for your action plan (link in comments)

  • How can we educate the workplace about the negative business impacts of ageism if we can’t use the words bias and stereotypes?

I've been writing on the Forbes platform about age and ageing at work for 6 years. For 5 years I've been developing and facilitating workplace training to build best-in-class workplaces for ALL ages. This list of banned words was published last week in the NYTs. The red bar next to more than half of them indicate the words I regularly use when delivering education and training. You see, it's not just about age. It's about EVERYONE, regardless of what demographic box or boxes they tick. Age intersects across all dimensions of diversity. What the current administration is doing not only challenges free speech, it makes a statement about the fragility of those supporting them. Truly a sad time. The link to my recent Forbes article on this very topic is in the comments below.

Have you seen the list of words being purged from government documents and programs? The list includes words like “discrimination,” “political,” “women,” and “status.” As Age Equity Alliance founder Sheila Callaham points out in Forbes, the implications for public health, women’s rights, workplace culture, and age equity are far-reaching. Note that “age” and “ageism” aren’t on the list. How might we leverage that? Janine Vanderburg Surbhi Kalia Jeanette Leardi https://lnkd.in/gbXsnbX4

China is ramping up its response to rapid population aging and declining birth rates, unveiling new policies to support both its elderly population and younger generations. The latest measures, announced ahead of the National People's Congress, include: ? Childcare and Education: Introducing childcare subsidies and plans to make preschool education free, particularly benefiting children in rural areas and those with migrant-worker parents. ? Support for the Elderly: Raising basic pension benefits for rural and urban retirees, expanding elderly care services, especially for seniors with disabilities, and gradually increasing the retirement age (now set at 63 for men, 58 for women in white-collar jobs, and 55 for women in blue-collar roles). Despite easing the one-child policy in recent years, China faces a significant demographic challenge: the population aged 60+ is expected to surpass 400 million by 2035—equivalent to the combined populations of Britain and the United States. High childcare costs, career pressures, and gender discrimination remain key barriers to higher birth rates. These new policies underscore China's urgent effort to navigate its demographic crisis by balancing support across generations. #PopulationAging #ChildcareSupport #DemographicChange #ChinaEconomy
