Mindset matters. What is yours? "The job market needs workers. The newest ones are over age 75... "...At Stanford Distinguished Careers Institute (DCI), experienced professionals leaving their primary career take a year to explore possibilities. "A neuroscientist is now publishing her wildlife photography; a trial lawyer is writing mystery novels, according to Katie Connor, the institute’s executive director. "After working as an environmental engineer, founding a coffee company in Hong Kong, taking time off to raise her children, lecturing at the University of Colorado at Boulder and eventually running its career office, Ms. Connor came to the institute to figure out her next step. It turned out to be heading up the institute. " 'Thinking outside the box is a big factor in a successful transition,' she says, as well as 'being curious and being willing to be a beginner. It can make all the difference.'... "...'There are structural problems [for older job-seekers looking for a change]. But I also think there are problems in our own mindset about aging.'..." Productivity falling? Be aware of these invisible causes. "...New McKinsey & Company analysis digs into these productivity differences to identify and measure lost productivity. We found that there are three clear (and measurable) reasons for a lack of productivity among individual employees: *They don’t have the skills needed to be successful in a role (the skill gap). *They aren’t engaged or energized by the work (the will gap). *They spend time in ways that don’t increase value, such as poor prioritization and low-value meetings (the time gap). "All three root causes of productivity loss can remain invisible to an organization’s leaders. "While attrition rates have fallen since the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, disengagement levels remain high—with significant consequences for workforce productivity and value creation, McKinsey research shows. As employee satisfaction falls, so do levels of engagement, performance, and well-being.2 "If left to fester, these root causes can reduce the output an organization gets from its workforce and can lead to broader problems that manifest as two core talent “symptoms”: costly attrition and vacancy rates. "Combined, these five factors could cost a median-size S&P 500 company roughly $480 million a year in lost productivity, our analysis shows..." There are lots of ways that #age #stereotyping shows up in our lives, including ways we sabotage ourselves when we come to believe the #myths we've been subjected to. Even younger people fall victim to these hurtful challenges. In the workplace, #culture is everything. A healthy, productive culture must demonstrate respect, curiosity, and a willingness to question when something feels wrong. This kind of #workplace can only exist when employers proactively shape them by setting and modelling expectations and have a zero-tolerance policy for any form of bullying, intimidation, and othering. #Ageism is one way that employees are made to feel bullied, intimidated, and othered. Any words and behaviours that diminish the workplace culture should be addressed. Education is key! Read this Forbes article to learn more about the different forms of age stereotyping. If your company is beyond this, join Age Equity Alliance Oct. 15 - 17 for our virtual, global educational forum where we'll be talking about many different ways that ageism hurts our people and our companies. Check the comments for a link to learn more and register.

"...'Older workers play a pivotal role in the U.S. labor force. This survey highlights the age-related bias older workers and job seekers face that is costing our economy trillions of dollars each year,' said Gary A. Officer, founder and president of CWI Labs. " 'An age inclusive workforce is an economic imperative, yet the U.S. lags behind all but one of the other G-7 countries on the percentage of GDP spent on worker training. "It is critical that we continue to work with policymakers and businesses to challenge the current approach to workforce development and drive opportunities for older workers to thrive in the rapidly evolving world of work.'..." "...Strong mental health supports strong teams. "Employees who feel like their employer cares about their well-being are five times more likely to advocate for their organization and 69% less likely to look for a new job. Healthy minds are good for business. According to Edelman's Trust Barometer, business is most trusted to introduce innovation into society, with an emphasis on partnering with government. CEOs need to safeguard jobs and take a stand on emerging ethical concerns. What might this look like in practice? Employers taking more responsibility in the health and wellness of employees across the age spectrum. In their report, How Employers Can Spark a Movement to Help us Live Longer and Healthier Lives, published last summer, Deloitte research suggests that employers have a strategic role in promoting healthy aging–going beyond basic wellness programs. By viewing employee health as a strategic asset, employers are uniquely positioned to influence holistic well-being—covering physical, mental, and financial health—through proactive initiatives. Not only is this better for individuals, families, and communities, it is also good for business by increasing productivity and retention. Join Age Equity Alliance's virtual Fall Forum on Oct. 15 to hear Andrew Davis, Principal at Deloitte, discuss this and other key findings from the report. Our three day event kicks off on Oct. 15 in the US, continues the following day in UK/Europe, and concludes on Oct. 17 in AsiaPac. The first ever global event on age and ageing at work, we're bringing you 24 experts from across the globe to help leaders better understand why it is critical to attract and retain talent from across the age spectrum. See the comments below for more information.
