March for Meals is here! ?? March is National Nutrition Month AND March is Women’s History Month - what better way to celebrate than to honor the incredible women who laid the foundation for Meals on Wheels! Back in 1940, during World War II, the "Blitz" bombing campaign left thousands in the United Kingdom without homes or access to food. But a group of determined women stepped up to help those in need — the Women's Volunteer Service of Great Britain. They began cooking and delivering meals to people who were suffering from the destruction of war. The very first Meals on Wheels delivery took place in 1943 in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, England. These brave women carried meals in prams, strollers, carts, bicycles, cars, and even on foot, ensuring that no one went hungry. British restaurants also chipped in by donating food to support this vital mission. Today, this spirit of compassion lives on with Meals on Wheels programs, which continue to bring nourishment and support to those who need it most. This #MarchForMeals, let's remember the strong women who paved the way, and honor their legacy by supporting our local Meals on Wheels programs.
