Exciting #geotechnical work is underway at the Indian River Inlet, Delaware, where I’m fortunate to be part of a major project led by the US Army Corps of Engineers, Philadelphia District. The project addresses critical #infrastructure #challenges, including north jetty repairs, stabilizing the failed bulkhead, and sand-tightening the south jetty. Agate Construction was awarded this contract, with completion expected by Spring 2025, improving the long-term resilience of the area. A major part of this project involves installing steel sheet piles, each 50 feet long and weighing 3,500 pounds, are being driven to reinforce the south jetty against erosion, with sand-tightening work starting in October 2024. The sand-tightening of a 215-foot section of the south jetty will involve driving steel sheet piles behind the existing sidewalk. Repairs on the north bulkhead include placing 12,000 tons of rock to stabilize the structure, ensuring long-term resilience against scouring. These repairs reflect the use of advanced geotechnical solutions to protect key infrastructure while supporting sustainable construction through the reuse of steel sheet piles. This three-phase project not only showcases advanced geotechnical techniques but also emphasizes long-term stability and resilience for Delaware’s coastal infrastructure. ?Stay tuned for more updates! #GeotechnicalEngineering #CoastalProtection #Infrastructure??#SteelSheetPiles #CoastalResilience #IndianRiverInlet #USACE

Geotechnical Engineer | Ph.D. Candidate in Civil Engineering | Subject Matter Expert in Flood Risk & Coastal Resilience | Lifelong Learner & Educator | Advancing Engineering for a Resilient Future
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, North Atlantic Division, Philadelphia District (USACE) is advancing the Lower Cape Meadows-Cape May Point project in #NewJersey to enhance coastal resilience through periodic nourishment. This innovative #backpassing method involves excavating sand from the beach itself, benefiting both the landscape and the local ecosystem, avoiding the need for offshore borrow area dredging and helps redistributing approximately 88,000 cubic yards of sand to restore the Cove Beach area! Additionally, the project will create three sand islands as bird habitats, benefiting local wildlife such as the piping plover and least terns. By restoring suitable nesting grounds, this initiative enhances biodiversity and supports the ecological balance within the region. This project is a collaborative effort among USACE, the NEW JERSEY DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION, Borough of Cape May Point, City of Cape Town, Lower Township, the The Nature Conservancy, and Cape May Point State Park. It aims to reduce damage from coastal storm events while protecting valuable fish and wildlife habitats in the beach and wetlands behind the dune. In September 2024, USACE awarded a $1.3 million contract to Agate Construction Inc., with construction expected to begin this fall and conclude before March 1, 2025. This initiative showcases the effectiveness of engineering with nature, balancing human needs with environmental protection. #CoastalResilience #Backpassing #EnvironmentalProtection #USACE #CapeMay #SustainableDevelopment #engineeringwithnature #beachfill
