关于我们
Founded in 2007, Afya Baltimore Inc. (ABI) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization started by five Baltimore City Public School System (BCPSS) educators for the purpose of creating charter schools in the city of Baltimore. Our founders, Katie Eichman, Karen Hughes, Will McKenna, Mike Morgan and Patricia Njenga, have an extensive combined knowledge of the urban public school climate— Baltimore in particular— and expertise in teaching, administration, teacher training, curriculum development, academic accountability, community relations, nutrition and fitness. Sixteen years later, ABI now consists of a talented and diverse group of community leaders, educators and parents that make up our board of directors, and an executive director and support staff, all of whom work together to provide support and responsible oversight of our schools. All of our founders remain active and employed with the ABI organization. ABI’s first school opened in Belair-Edison in 2008— Afya Public Charter School. Next came Tunbridge Public Charter School in the Govans neighborhood in 2010; then the conversion of Brehms Lane Public Charter School in 2016. Most recently in 2019, we merged Afya and Brehms Lane into The Belair-Edison School, a dual-facility elementary/middle school. ABI is now responsible for educating more than 1500 students in Baltimore City across two schools and three campuses, from PreK to 8th grade.

Earlier this month the ABI Governing Board gathered for a retreat at our office in Hampden. This was a chance for our group to have many good conversations and organize for both the short- and long-term sustainability of ABI and our schools. We are grateful to the folks, new and old, on our Board, who guide us through this work with their experience and expertise! And a warm welcome to our newest Board members: Danielle Stager Zoller, Lara Ohanian, Jessica Saunders, Megan Williams, and Erika Brockman; and our newest Family Representatives: Angel Jenkins-Jones, Kimberly Bell, and Karen Wilson. #TheAfyaWay #ABISchools

Please join us for National Principals Month as we give our school leaders a big shout out. There is no harder job than being a school principal and Ms. Wickes, Ms. Halsey, and Ms. Miele are each amazing. They work tirelessly for our students and families. They do their very best to inspire and motivate our teachers and staff. They are calm. They are creative. They care. They give. They provide us with hope and inspiration. They lead! Thank you, principals — we appreciate you! #TheAfyaWay

The Tunbridge School middle school musical is this Wednesday 5/15 and Thursday 5/16! While Tunbridge was fortunate to receive a generous grant from the Fund for Educational Excellence to help purchase their very own stage this year instead of renting it, they are still hoping to raise funds to cover the remainder of the cost of this important investment in the Tunbridge Fine Arts Department! If you have already purchased your ticket, you can make a one-time donation at their ticket site towards their new stage. And if you haven't purchased your ticket yet, please consider being a "sponsor" which helps Tunbridge pay for their stage as well as gets you a seat and your name in the Playbill! As we are days away from the 10th annual production at Tunbridge, we are excited and grateful for this milestone event that the youngest owls aspire to participate in and the oldest owls thrive in! It's all part of what we call the Promise & the Pathway of being in an Afya Baltimore Inc. School leading to high school and beyond. Bring on "High School Musical Jr." this week! #TheAfyaWay #terrifictunbridge https://lnkd.in/ezyKVnbK

ABI is proud to have sponsored Tim Arbuckle (Tunbridge Middle) in the 2023 Faculty Fund to implement an indoor gardening program this year using hydroponic systems. Together with colleague Michael John, they started with a Rise Hydroponic System in one of their classrooms, two smaller units in the other classroom, and are working on setting up one more. All of the systems are being managed and maintained by their students, as are the plants. So far they have grown and harvested a host of different lettuce varieties, herbs such as cilantro, basil, dill and parsley, and celery. They are currently testing out how tomatoes and peppers grow in the hydroponic systems. Mr. Arbuckle is branching out and working to build custom hydroponic systems so that they can slowly start to provide more teachers and classrooms with a small system to grow veggies throughout the year. The students have learned about germination, nutrients, the life cycle, and harvesting so far and are having a blast! Please consider making a donation in support of our Faculty Fund. Our application for staff for 2024 is open and is already collecting the next round of exciting ideas! Donate here: https://lnkd.in/ek6Q3Muh #TheAfyaWay #ABISchools
