One month after her retirement, SSgt (ret) Jennifer Chang is finally 'in the right place' to experience her first AFW2 C.A.R.E Event. Enrolled in the Empowerment to Employment track, Chang is learning to translate her military duty experience to the civilian workforce. It's where she struggles the most in terms of the after effects from her illness. She wonders if her talents and skills that were valued and respected can be viewed the same outside of the Air Force. "No one else that I work with can relate to what I was going through. But here, it's such a wonderful environment where I can not only connect with those who are able to feel what I feel, experience what I have experienced, but also be encouraging to one another." She's attending with her brother, Brian, who is participating in the Caregiver track. He came to support Jennifer because she's always been supportive of him and he wants to pay it back to her. "Growing up, I have always looked up to her," Brian said. "She's very strong and I'm just amazed at what she can endure. Whatever she get's herself into, I want to be there to support her." His first few days in the Caregiver track has been a surprising wealth of knowledge and resources. Most of all, he said it's been welcoming. "I'm just so happy to know that we're not alone in this experience," he said. We'll hear more from Brian and his experience as a Caregiver in tomorrow's story.

Today, as part of AFW2’s Day of Healing in celebration of Warrior Care Month, various artists who have been inspired by creative expression will showcase their artwork. Artists like TSgt Krystal Waters Howard, will display their art during the Northeast C.A.R.E Event at National Harbor and Joint Base Andrews on November 18th. Her piece represents female veterans. She hopes it 'humanizes the characteristics of a female veteran who often is divided into half human and half hero - saving the world along with herself." Whether it's painting, drawing, crafting, sculpting or digital media, the ability to use any of these forms to create unique pieces of art can feel therapeutic. "How can I support you through this?" These Recovering Airmen Mentorship Program participants embraced the dedication and care required when serving as an AFW2 Mentor at the Northeast C.A.R.E. Event today. Throughout the day's training and discussions, participants were able to best prepare to serve as wingmen for their fellow Warriors. Our RAMP Mentors volunteer their time to serve fellow AFW2 Warriors by providing guidance and support. The support provided by our Mentors covers a broad spectrum of illnesses and visible/invisible wounds, while encouraging confidence and a team approach to recovery.
