We help communities navigate wildfires. You CAN recover, rebuild, and reimagine after megafire.
关于我们
Since 2017, when our own region suffered a megafire, we have passionately served our mission to support fire-impacted communities as they recover, rebuild, and reimagine a more resilient future. Our goal is to ensure every megafire community is supported as they lead and design their own recoveries with a network of care. Collaboration: Our Approach We support LOCAL leaders after a megafire by providing coaching, support, convening, & navigation. We pay our lessons forward through deployments to megafire communities and support share best practices and form partnerships to bridge gaps post-disaster. Community to Community: You CAN Recover, Rebuild, & Reimagine after a megafire. Our C2C program connects leaders from wildfire-impacted areas with peers who have successfully recovered from similar situations. Together, they collaborate throughout the recovery process, fostering unity and strength. We stay with communities for several years, long after most have rushed out, we are still there. Advocacy and Education: We lead the effort in Washington DC for fire survivors via organizing federal advocacy delegations for resiliency, recovery, and improved public policy. CEO Jennifer Gray Thompson serves on the Bipartisan Policy Center's Disaster Response Reform Task Force, making recommendations to Congress. We lead delegations of fire survivors to Washington to advocate for better policies and raise awareness. We are known by lawmakers and agencies. We get things done for you. Our annual Wildfire Leadership Summit is a highly regarded invite-only conference bringing together disaster leaders, policymakers, innovators, and frontline communities for a national convening of a 360-degree view of how to address the issue of megafire -- together. Since 2020, our "How to Disaster" podcast highlights experiences, best practices, and lessons learned from disaster professionals and community members. Find us on YouTube and all platforms. I was very honored to attend Listening for a Change annual Sunset Soiree, to see some of my favorite people, including Lorez Bailey and Andre Bailey I was humbled to recieve the Connie Codding Humanist Award. I even got to sit across from Connie during dinner. Many thanks to Phyllis Rosenfield who has carried this mission forward for 20 years. If you can listen, you can change the world. To be recognized by Phyllis, Melissa Long, and her team is a great honor for me and everyone who has made After the Fire USA what it is today and will be tomorrow, including OG board member Lisa G. Carre?o. Next week, Phyllis will be in DC screening her film "Embers of Awakening: From Firestorms to Climate Healing" which features interviews about the 2017 Tubbs Fire from every corner of the community. Invitees are members of Congress as a guest of Rep. Mike Thompson. You can watch the film on YouTube now. End of Day 3 on Capitol Hill for HR 5863, Disaster Relief Tax Bill Many thanks to Brad Sherwood and Kevin Goss for stomping the halls with After the Fire USA yet again. We are asking for a hotline next week to get this bill done in time to provide desperately needed relief for fire survivors who've waited way too long and are out of time. Grateful for the leaders and staff and supporters at home making this a massive priority. Fire survivors have already lost everything once. They should not be taxed on their suffering and pain. Together we DO.

?? Finishing up our 2nd day on Capitol Hill advocating for HR 5863 to be passed by the Senate before the end of September to meet the deadlines for fire survivors. Thankful for the time and attention of Senator Senator Laphonza Butler (D-CA) + offices of Senator Senator Mazie K. Hirono (D-Hawai’i) and Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawai’i) as well as Jill Tokuda (D-Hawai’i) and our stalwart leader Congressman Mike Thompson (D-Napa). Tomorrow is another full day. HR 5863 Day One Update We are in DC this week pushing hard for the final steps to pass Disaster Tax Relief. Timing is not ideal but megafires don't care about politics and we prioritize people first. Every single day. Every single time. Jennifer Gray Thompson, MPA Brad Sherwood Kevin Goss #afterthefire #taxjustice

?? HR 5863?? After The Fire USA is prepping today for our advocacy trip to Washington DC tomorrow morning to continue to demand tax justice for fire survivors via HR 5863. We applaud the continued push from Congressman Mike Thompso and Rep. Doug LaMalfa on the House side as Senator Alex Padilla leads from the Senate with bipartisan support. You can find Rep. Thompson's latest letter in this post (August 2024). Thanks again to Bipartisan Policy Center Action for their support and endorsement of this bill. Our focus is moved from the larger tax bill (7024) to the Bipartisan Federal Disaster Tax Relief Bill (5863) which was tucked into 7024. Reminder, we passed out of the House in last May as a stand-alone 382-7 and have been part of negotiations to pass the larger tax bill at the same time. In other words, we have two paths. We are focusing on the most direct and highlighting the fact that many fire survivors filed for October extensions and must have this bill become law. It must pass the Senate. Now. This delegation is small and very experienced. Led by our CEO Jennifer Gray Thompson, MPA. She will be joined by Dixie Fire survivor and County of Plumas @Kevin Goss - Supervisor District 2 as well as Tubbs Fire survivor Brad Sherwood. Our focus is Senate GOP. We will update as we go. Thank you for your faith and support. This September marks 3 years of running hard to bring tax relief to fire survivors who deserve justice. Too long but we are so close. Let's do this ?? ??
