Candi Morris joined her local AFSP chapter following the death of her father in 2015. Now, as an active chapter member and suicide prevention advocate, Candi has experience organizing community walks, serving on her chapter board, tabling at events, presenting AFSP programs, and more. Candi's extensive experience taught her a lot but one lesson stands out: "When someone opens up to me, I listen. I might not say a lot. I might just give a hug. But those small gestures are what can put an unexpected smile on someone’s face and let them know they are not alone and that there is hope: a lot of HOPE!" Research shows that how we talk about suicide in the media can influence the health outcomes of those who are vulnerable and reduce the risk of contagion. That’s why it’s vital that we cover suicide-related deaths through safe reporting practices to protect those who are most vulnerable, respect surviving families, and save lives. Cultural change can start with a conversation. Some cultures may be more open and receptive to discussing mental health and the treatments available than others. In cultures with less acceptance or awareness, it can be especially challenging for individuals to confront and seek support for their mental health struggles, often leading to feelings of isolation and misunderstanding. Talking openly about mental health while understanding relevant cultural barriers is essential in destigmatizing and prioritizing your mental health.
