With electricity needs projected to skyrocket in the next decade, eyes are on small modular reactors (SMR) as a potential future solution. With approximately 4 GW of SMR capacity in the pipeline, it is worth paying attention to this space: ?? In recent years, interest in SMR build has increased. For example, Google, Meta, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and Microsoft have all entered into conversations with developers with the intent of building SMR facilities in proximity to large data centers that need significant, reliable power. ?? During the Biden Administration, nuclear energy development received federal support through the 45U Zero-emission Nuclear Power Production credit (45U) included in the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), as well as several loans issued through the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Loan Program Office (LPO). It seems this support will continue under the Trump Administration, as energy secretary Chris Wright released a second loan disbursement to Holtec International worth $56.8m for the restart of the Palisades nuclear plant in Michigan in March 2025. Additionally, the DOE has re-issued a $900m solicitation for SMR deployment with applications closing in April 2025. ?? Though there are ~20 announcements for the U.S., as of March 2025, there are no operational SMR facilities yet. The thoughts presented here represent AFRY’s view on the future of SMRs as the U.S. deals with an administration shift, a growing need for reliable and affordable energy, and novel power-providing technologies. As the plan for the next four years becomes clearer, we look forward to exploring questions including: ?? What does the SMR landscape in the U.S. look like today? ?? What hurdles do SMR developers face regarding support schemes, engineering and design needs, and the current state of global geopolitics? ?? Is policy and political support enough to successfully bring SMRs to a point of commercial viability? Congratulations Boliden and Boliden Odda AS ! The inauguration of Boliden Odda, the world's most climate-efficient zinc smelter, marks a significant milestone. This expansion represents one of Boliden's largest projects and one of the biggest industrial investments ever on Norway's mainland. The upgrade will increase the production of climate-friendly zinc from 200 ktonnes to 350 ktonnes. With this boost, Boliden Odda is set to become Europe's second-largest and most efficient zinc smelter. We are proud to be contributed to this important project driving sustainable transition! AFRY's project team provided engineering and site services, including detailed engineering, site services and project procurement support. ?? Mit grossen Schritten in Richtung Realisierung im Projekt "überdeckung Ostring, Bushof Süd" in Regensdorf: Vor eineinhalb Jahren startete die Projektierung für das Bau- und Auflageprojekt. Der bestehende Ostring mit der vierspurigen Kantonsstrasse wird über ca. 110 m überdeckt. Durch die Platzgewinnung wird darauf ein neuer Bushof erstellt. Bis zum 9. M?rz 2025 wurde das Projekt aufgelegt und es werden nun die Ausschreibungsunterlagen für die Baumeister- und Elektroarbeiten erstellt. AFRY erbringt einen Grossteil der Projektierung und Bauleitung inkl. der Betriebs- und Sicherheitsausrüstung. Um den bestehenden Betontrog überdecken zu k?nnen, muss die bestehende Bodenplatte verst?rkt werden. Zudem wird im Rahmen der Ausführung auch der Ostring Instand gesetzt und L?rmschutzmassnahmen im Rampenbereich umgesetzt. Die grossen Herausforderungen sind dabei das Bauen im Bestand und unter Betrieb. Die Bauarbeiten sind so zu gestalten, dass der Verkehr m?glichst wenig davon spürt.
