Things are looking a little different around here ?? Earlier this year, Afro Charities partnered with Wide Angle Youth Media for a timely brand refresh. We’re thrilled with the work that Dan Talib Latif Flounders, Design Director, Deshaun Fortune, Project Lead Designer, Aleeia Townes, Designer, and Aiara Manning, Designer put into this project. The Wide Angle crew relied on interviews that Retrospect conducted with our team and partners to learn more about our mission, vision, and ethos. They came up with an updated logo and style guide for our brand, using Vocal Type’s Tatsuro font. What do you think??? ___________________ Wide Angle Youth Media provides Baltimore youth and communities with the media education and resources to represent themselves. Vocal Type is a Black-owned foundry launched by Maryland native Tré Seals in 2016. Afro Charities previously used his Carrie font for the cover of our publication To the Front: Black Women and the Vote, released in 2020. #AfroCharities #BrandRefresh #LogoDesign #VocalType #WideAngleYouthMedia #RetrospectStudios

Happy 132nd birthday to The AFRO-American Newspapers!
Today is the The AFRO-American Newspapers' 132nd birthday. The news organization was founded August 13, 1892, and has been owned and stewarded by my family since 1897. As Executive Director of Afro Charities, Inc., I have the extraordinary privilege of caring for the AFRO’s extensive archives. Within the past 5 years, Afro Charities’ team has expanded from just me to 6.5 full time employees, thanks to several important foundation partners, government grants and individual donors. Our team is working diligently every day to protect and share these remarkable collections, and to develop Baltimore’s Upton Mansion — vacant since 2006 — into the permanent home and research center for this treasure trove of world history, as told through Black perspectives. Understanding our past provides a solid foundation from which to build inclusive and vibrant futures. Check out our website to learn more about how we are ushering in a new era for the AFRO Archives in Old West Baltimore: https://lnkd.in/eSSs6_u4, and please consider making a donation to support this transformative work.

What a joy to welcome the Comptroller of Maryland to the AFRO Archives! The whole Afro Charities, Inc. team thoroughly enjoyed sharing the collections with you, and discovering your personal connections to the archives.
“The AFRO-American Newspapers,” also known as “The Afro,”- is one of the oldest Black newspapers in the country. Yesterday, Comptroller Lierman and staff had the opportunity to witness over 130 years of American history firsthand as they toured the newspapers' archives housed in the Maryland State Archives facility in Baltimore County.
