?? "Some startups may also acquire others as their own way of expansion, not just being acquired. And I think that is the new way." - Mope Abudu at AfriGloCal VC ?? A key takeaway from my research into adapting the venture capital (VC) model for Nigeria is the focus on innovative exit strategies to address the region’s challenging exit environment. Traditional IPOs and local M&A activity from corporates remain limited, prompting African VC firms to explore alternative routes. ?? Secondaries have become a prominent exit channel, allowing early-stage investors to sell stakes to those focused on more mature startups. Additionally, startup-led M&A is emerging as an important exit avenue with successful startups developing into standalone corporations and acquiring other startups. There is growing collaboration across the continent among smaller startups as well. By acquiring each other they create larger entities with better chances of a successful exit. ??? Finally, defining a clear exit rationale from the outset has proven essential. Identifying potential exit opportunities early helps startups align strategically and position themselves effectively for acquisition or IPO. As an example, Nichole Yembra at The Chrysalis Company highlights Paystack’s founders, who strategically positioned the company for acquisition by Stripe from the start, ultimately achieving a successful exit. --- ? In my thesis, "Adapting Venture Capital for Nigeria," I interviewed 10+ leading VCs who are driving Africa's VC transformation. If you'd like the executive summary and full research thesis, comment "DM” on this post. Stay tuned for the next key insight coming next week!

The past week has been full of purposeful activities as an #Africanfocused?#VC #fundmanager. Kickoff was the culmination of the 4 month-long Moremi II Accelerator program, excellently run by?Kuramo Capital Management?& generously sponsored by MEDA held in Cape Town SA. A well-rounded program with intentional exposure to the intricacies of Venture fund management as a?#FemaleFundManager?and the practical realities of the roadmaps towards success. All through the program, key support & insights were exchanged to guide on structural, technical, operational, deployment, value creation, exit strategies and key ingredients of successfully navigating fundraising! Great networking with fellow African Women fund managers forging close professional networks and friendships in our unified purpose. Then it was straight into the flurry of activities at?#SuperReturn, a significant African investment PE/VC landscape event with opportunities to engage with?#Investors?#LP's #FoF #DFIs?#GPs?(other?#Womeninvc), Government investment Vehicles and Ventures.?Key panel tracks that resonated with me were; 1) Lesson from Emerging Markets around the world – delivered by?William Bao Bean?who articulated how solutions for Africa must be African and investing in home grown solutions are profitable with multiplier effects in its impact. He showcased local ventures with impressive results of growth & profitability. 2) Modern Family Offices –?Abiola Adediran, MBA, FCA, FIMC, CMC?&?Yemi Osindero.??Insights into how African Family Offices are a key funding source not to be overlooked as they serve to fill the gap between VC’s & LP’s. They are critical in supporting ventures with their innate collective family expertise and network. Key take outs were alignment of objectives in terms of the fund structures presented. 3)Vitalising VC –?Ola Brown, MFR?Babacar S.? A spirited session showing how?African ventures against all odds are delivering competitively and the VC ecosystem instrumental in their scale. There are exits in Africa and more are coming was the clear message here. 4) Women in Africa Networking Lunch - Kigali International Financial Centre?and?Fadilah Tchoumba of ABAN anchored this?closed door event for Women GP’s only that demystified challenges and suggested solutions for female GP’s. and shared practical solutions that galvanize women across Africa into Angel investments and shared recent partnerships with KIFC. Got to see sights with trips to?#TableMountain, a seven wonder of the world, Drum beating experiences, trips to local Cape Town, seaside and food delicacies. Great hanging out with fellow GP’s and LP’s, albeit a packed week with lots of to-do’s, collaborations, deal exchanges, co-investments and follow ups into the DM’s of the many engaged persons.?Looking forward to a brighter fundraising and investment climate.
