Digital lending apps are growing in popularity in Kenya, often through flashy ads and influencers, attracting borrowers from all walks of life with the allure of quick cash for minimal effort. These users often do not read the terms and conditions, and end up with sky-high interest rates and short repayment periods, made worse through relentless calls and threatening messages when they default. #AppTrapped, produced by Cynthia Gichiri in partnership with DW Akademie, explores the hidden costs of mobile lending. 关于我们
Africa Uncensored is an independent media house set up by Kenya’s finest investigative journalists. Our goal is to investigate, expose and empower. Having worked in investigative journalism for years we broke off to follow the stories that matter to the country and the people. Our goal is to show Africa as it really is. Africa’s story is often a disjointed summary of facts (and fiction) that don’t do this continent justice. Yet there is so much to say and show about Africa. We believe that the power of investigative and in-depth journalism can be used to hold up a mirror to Africa, and show it what it really is. We will expose wrongdoing by the powerful, and shine a light on the things that truly matter to the people of this continent. Our editorial policy is, simply, The Truth.

Boni Forest, located in Lamu County along the Kenya-Somalia border, has become synonymous with the Somali militant group Al-Shabaab, but the Boni people, also known as the Aweer, call it home. Due to the high level of insecurity in the area, residents are cut off from essential services, including healthcare and education. One such resident is Esha Sulo, whose education was cut short after militants attacked her school, and who lost her twin babies to stillbirth due to the lack of healthcare facilities in the area. Watch the full documentary, produced in partnership with the Institute for War and Peace Reporting, this Friday, 21st November, exclusively on the Africa Uncensored YouTube channel.

Our team at Africa Uncensored had the pleasure of spending two enriching days with journalism, media, and mass communication students at Kabarak University. We were warmly welcomed by Dr Michael M. Ndonye, PhD, Head of the Mass Communication Department. Over the course of our visit, we led sessions on fact-checking, a day in the life of a reporter, and the realities of investigative journalism, mobile journalism, content creation, social media management, production, financing, and budgeting. We also shared insights on the various opportunities available, both with Africa Uncensored and within the broader media industry. We’re incredibly grateful to Kabarak University’s leadership, the Mass Communication Department, and the students for their enthusiastic engagement and warm hospitality. Thank you for making our visit so memorable!
