AESP SCHOLAR SPOTLIGHT: Meet Emmanuel, the Most Active Scholar – AESP Cohort I Emmanuel Onyeke recently earned a BSc in Economics from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. His academic journey was marked by research, competitions, and leadership roles that strengthened his expertise in economic analysis. An interesting fact about Emmanuel: before starting university, he worked as a security guard to save for his education. During that time, he taught himself computer skills, which later became instrumental in his research and tech-driven approach to economics. Emmanuel’s journey reflects a deep commitment to research-driven solutions for Africa’s economic challenges. His passion for leveraging data, research, and technology-driven solutions positions him as a future leader in Africa’s economic transformation.

AESP SCHOLAR SPOTLIGHT Safiya Isyaku Umar is, first and foremost, a girl and a woman who holds integrity close to her heart. To her, success is where personal achievement intersects with making a positive impact on society. Graduating as the best student in the Department of Economics at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, she represented ABU in two major research competitions—the CFA Equity Research Challenge, where her team made it to the national finals, and the AFEL Economic Impact Challenge, where they emerged as first runners-up. In her final year, she also served as the Academic Secretary of the Islamic Economics Taught Association (IETA), mentoring students and fostering a culture of academic excellence. Passionate about academia and research, Safiya aspires to become a professor, using education to shape lives and drive meaningful change. She is committed to continuous learning, with a short-term goal of pursuing a master’s degree and a long-term vision of excelling in academia and economic research.
