Connecting academics, activists, and policy-makers to promote efforts to dismantle structural inequality.

关于我们

Founded in 1996 as a media-monitoring think tank and information clearinghouse, the African American Policy Forum works to bridge the gap between scholarly research and public discourse related to inequality, discrimination and injustice. The AAPF seeks to build bridges between academic, activist and policy-making sectors in order to advance a more inclusive and robust public discourse on the challenge of achieving equity within and across diverse communities. Developed as part of an ongoing effort to promote women’s rights and gender rights in the context of struggles for racial justice, the AAPF strives to promote the interests of all communities who suffer from intersecting forms of discrimination (e.g., class-based, race-based, and gender-based), and unrecognized patterns of institutional discrimination. By bringing to the forefront perspectives on equity and equality that have been marginalized or distorted within the traditional parameters of public discourse, AAPF seeks to introduce counter-narratives to the "conventional wisdom" that dominates our mainstream media. The Policy Forum is dedicated to advancing and expanding racial justice, gender equality, and the indivisibility of all human rights, both in the U.S. and internationally.

A week ago today, Kimberlé?Crenshaw received the prestigious?W.E.B. Du Bois Medal?from the Hutchins Center for African & African American Research at Harvard University. In her?acceptance speech, she highlighted how we can't be selective in what we fight: “We have to fight against the censoring of our students as much as we fight the censoring of our books," Crenshaw told the audience of over three hundred academics, alumni and students in Sanders Theatre. “We have to fight against the selective use of ‘comfort’ to suppress uncomfortable conversations, whether it is about death and destruction in Tulsa 100 years ago, or about death and destruction in the Middle East today. We have to fight against the forced occupation of our minds as much as we fight over the control of our bodies. And when we commemorate our towering figures, our noteworthy victories, our enduring stories, it is the lessons, the concepts, the ideas that are bequeathed to us—the hard fought literacy to define and name our reality in order to transform it that we should value.” ? Congratulations to UCLA Law distinguished professor Kimberle Crenshaw, who was awarded the prestigious W. E. B. Du Bois Medal from the Hutchins Center at Harvard University! The W. E. B. Du Bois Medal is Harvard's highest honor in African and African American studies. It recognizes global leaders who've advanced the field through scholarship, art, writing, journalism, philanthropy, and public service. "I am overwhelmed with pride to accept the W. E. B. Du Bois medal from the Hutchins Center, especially at a time when efforts to erase knowledge about our past and silence the scholars and artists who advance it are occurring. This is why we have to continue to fight to sustain critical thinking and fight for the freedom to learn,"?says Professor Crenshaw.
