?? A Journey of Purpose, Intercultural Sharing, and Discovery in Tigray ??
As part of our mission to support the post-conflict recovery in the Tigray region, the AWC-Next team was privileged to embark on a meaningful journey. Beyond our outreach efforts to support education and the community, we had the opportunity to explore the rich history and culture that Tigray has to offer, deepening our bond as a team while engaging in powerful intercultural exchanges among Africans.
Our journey took us to some of the most historically significant sites in the region, offering a unique opportunity to learn from and appreciate the diverse heritage of our continent:
?? Axum – The ancient city of Axum, known for its historic tombs and obelisks, represents one of the earliest and most influential civilizations in Africa. Home to towering structures that are over 1,700 years old, it was a powerful reminder of Africa’s deep and rich history of innovation and leadership.
?? Al Nejashi Mosque – One of the oldest mosques in Africa, built in the 7th century, Al Nejashi symbolizes the harmony and tolerance between different religions in Ethiopia. This mosque stands as a testament to the historical bond between Ethiopia and the Islamic world, and it was an inspiring moment of intercultural sharing as we reflected on Ethiopia’s tradition of religious coexistence.
?? Shire – This historic town, significant both in ancient and modern history, provided us with a humbling experience. Walking through Shire’s streets, we were moved by the stories of strength, resilience, and hope, learning more about the culture of the people who continue to rebuild and thrive.
As we journeyed, we also passed through other historic regions such as Degua Temben, Tsaeda Emba, and the iconic Adwa, where the Battle of Adwa marked a defining moment in African resistance against colonialism. These places further enriched our understanding of Tigray’s historical and cultural significance, reminding us of the resilience and strength of the Ethiopian people.
This journey was a profound experience of learning and intercultural exchange. Our team came away not only more connected as colleagues but also deeply inspired by the diverse histories and cultures we encountered. It reinforced the importance of mutual understanding and sharing among Africans as we work towards the common goal of sustainable development across our continent.
Together, through education, peacebuilding, and community empowerment, we will continue to build bridges and create lasting impact across Africa.
