A first of its kind platform to develop and finance climate-smart water projects at scale in Africa.

关于我们

Africa Water Infrastructure Development (AWID) is a platform to develop water infrastructure in Africa, established by Metito and British International Investment (BII) in 2023. The platform is the first of its kind to develop and finance climate-smart water projects at scale, including wastewater treatment and water supply infrastructures.. AWID aims to improve access to safe and reliable water, treat and recycle wastewater for consumers and businesses, and increase climate resilience through a water-secure Africa. The platform will work towards integrating climate change considerations, green technologies, and alternative energy components into its investments, which will help to reduce the environmental footprint and increase the resilience of water infrastructure to the evolving climate change. It will also demonstrate a viable commercial model for water infrastructure development and water provision in Africa, helping to mobilize long-term capital and investment into the sector.

  • *AWID joins the community for Umuganda, planting 12,500 trees in Bugesera district ? Kigali Water LTD (KWL), a wholly owned company within the Africa Water Infrastructure Development (AWID) portfolio, proudly participated in Rwanda’s annual community workday, Umuganda, in October 2024, planting 12,500 trees in Bugesera district to support environmental restoration and sustainability. ? This year’s event was attended by notable leaders, including, Hon. Marie Kayisire, Minister of State for Local Government, Rwanda; Hon. Motlatsi Maqelepo, Minister of Tourism, Sports, Arts, and Culture, Lesotho; Hon. Adontsi Letsema, Minister of Forestry and Environment, Lesotho; and Richard Mutabazi, Mayor of Bugesera District, as well as local security officials and UNDP representatives. Each leader underscored the significance of environmental initiatives, while the Kigali Bulk Water treatment plant’s contributions were highlighted for bridging Rwanda’s water supply gap, providing clean water to over 500,000 residents, and meeting more than 20% of Kigali city’s water needs. ? Following the tree planting, the delegation visited the Kigali Bulk Water Treatment Plant, Sub-Saharan Africa’s first bulk water supply Public-Private Partnership (PPP) project. Positive feedback and interest from the visiting leaders underscored the transformative impact of sustainable infrastructure in driving regional growth and environmental resilience. This commitment aligns with UN SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and SDG 15 (Life on Land), fostering a lasting positive impact. ? AWID is a venture between Metito, a global investor and operator of water, and wastewater treatment projects across pan-emerging markets, and British International Investment, the UK’s development finance institution, and impact investor.? ? • *Inspiring Future Generations: Educational Visit to Kigali Bulk Water Treatment Plant* ? Africa Water Infrastructure Development (AWID) was delighted to host students from Path to Success International School (Cambridge Assessment in Rwanda) for an engaging and educational visit to the Kigali Bulk Water Treatment Plant (KBWTP).? ? The visit provided a hands-on demonstration of the entire water treatment process, from treatment through to delivery, gaining insights into each critical stage. To add a playful finish to this educational day, AWID organized an onsite basketball game where students enjoyed some healthy competition. ? AWID's ongoing commitment to creating a positive impact by sharing knowledge and raising awareness about water supply challenges and opportunities, is primarily focused on younger generations. This is important for a region where water scarcity is posing significant challenges. ? The KBWTP plays a critical role in addressing these challenges. With a capacity of 40,000 m3/day, it meets approximately 25% of Kigali’s water needs, providing clean water for over 500,000 residents. As Sub-Saharan Africa’s first bulk water supply PPP project, the plant has become a prominent regional landmark, illustrating how sustainable water infrastructure can support urban development and economic growth. ? The KBWTP is part of the Africa Water Infrastructure Development (AWID) portfolio, a venture between Metito, a global leader in water and wastewater treatment, and British International Investment, the UK’s development finance institution, and impact investor. ?
