Yes, waterbeds have made a comeback. But they’re no longer the groovy, “motion-of-the-ocean” beds you might remember from the ‘70s. Redesigned and reimagined for the 21st century, new Afloat waterbeds are revolutionizing the way we sleep. Afloat founders Charlie Hall, Keith Koenig, and Micheal Geraghty began their careers selling those original 1970s waterbeds. Hall patented the original design in 1968 with the goal of creating a mattress that could conform to the body without creating pressure points. But while beloved by many (Hugh Hefner, the Smothers Brothers, and Jefferson Airplane were among its fans), those early models didn’t work for everyone. People worried about leaks. Some didn’t enjoy the “waves” produced when they shifted in bed. And the weight of all that water made those early models challenging to move.
