Culinary Airmen from 11 different Food 2.0 installations recently took part in the first Salute Hospitality Epicurean Faceoff, or SHEF, sponsored by our Air Force Services Center and its industry partner Aramark, at the San Antonio Culinary Institute of America. Airman Sharon Villacres Baracaldo from Altus Air Force Base, Oklahoma emerged as the winner with a dish inspired by her mother and Latin roots. Food 2.0, part of the Healthy Food Initiative, provides healthier food choices for Airmen, Guardians and others at 28 Department of the Air Force installations. Each Food 2.0 location in the competition is managed in collaboration with Aramark. The Department of the Air Force has awarded its first contract to determine whether a power plant using geopressured geothermal systems can generate the clean energy needed for a base to achieve energy resilience. Sage Geosystems, Inc., granted the $1.9 million to investigate the potential of geopressured geothermal systems to develop a demonstration project at an off-site test well in Starr County, Texas, in 2025. This would usher in a new era of clean-power producing plants that meet the entire energy needs of installations in the DAF. This month is National Hispanic Heritage Month, AFIMSC honors Hispanic/Latino Americans' rich heritage and diversity. This year's theme, "Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together," underscores the unity and resilience of the Hispanic community. The theme is embodied in this year's graphic by individuals like Master Sergeant Roy Benavidez, a Medal of Honor recipient; Navy Capt. Mery-Angela Sanabria Katson, a leadership mentor; and Private Roberto Clemente, a baseball legend.
