This is what we believe. In Greenville, affordable housing impacts not only its tenants, but on the Upstate as a whole. When you empower people, you empower a community.

It’s simple. When rent rises despite wages staying the same, families are forced to move repeatedly to find affordable housing options. This means their children are not able to stay in the same school for long, resulting in lower test scores on standardized tests. When a child is in a stable home and can remain in a single school system, their test scores rise. Not to mention, an permanent living situation in the same area allows children to cultivate long-term relationships that set them up for a successful future.

Everyone suffered through Helene, but not all of us were affected the same way. Mario Brown wrote this piece for The Greenville News detailing the difficulties the affordable housing communities are facing after the devastation of the storm.
