Active duty military personnel, veterans, and their families have a unique perspective on life, with their own sets of joys and challenges. Affinity Plus wants to ensure that all members of our armed forces and their families feel supported and heard within our organization. Our newest Employee Resource Group (ERG) is for Veterans, Active Duty, and Families. An ERG is a group of employees who share a characteristic, whether it's gender, ethnicity, religious affiliation, or lifestyles. The goal of an ERG is to give our employees a voice and visibility in the conversation about what inclusion looks like at Affinity Plus. “We wanted to create a place for employees and their families to connect,” said Emily Campbell, Duluth branch member consultant and ERG founder, said. “As members of the armed forces or their families, you can spend 8 hours a day at work feeling like no one understands what you’re going through. But there are many of us!” Emily approached her manager about creating the ERG after her husband was deployed with the Army National Guard for 13 months starting in 2022. His employer reached out to her regularly while he was deployed, offering support and care packages, and even helping take care of home repairs. “I’ve never felt more supported in my life,” Emily said. “And then I thought, ‘What could we do if we had that type of support system at Affinity Plus?’” This new ERG will provide a forum for people to talk through challenges they or family members are currently experiencing regarding military service. They also hope to develop a standard of care and support for active-duty members and their families. Imposter scams are increasingly common, as one of our members recently had the misfortune of learning firsthand. Our member was babysitting their grandson when they received a text about a suspicious charge on their credit card. Concerned, they replied “No,” to the charge, and soon after got a call from someone claiming to be from Affinity Plus. While still taking care of the baby, our member spoke with this so-called employee, who asked for personal details like their credit card number and password. After nearly an hour, something felt off, and when the caller couldn’t answer a simple question, the member realized it was a scam. They hung up immediately and contacted Affinity Plus, and their accounts were quickly secured. Our member advisors also warned them that the scammers might try again—and they did. However, this time our member was ready and thanks to their quick thinking and vigilance, they avoided further harm.
