We celebrate each win – whether personal or professional. At our office, you can find our team ringing the bell after securing a new project or toasting a co-worker who’s passed the PE. Achievements and hard work are recognized daily. Here, you’re more than a number. Our clients are all a short drive away, which means you can see the project from start to finish. By choosing work in the region, our team can visit the jobsite and still make it home for dinner. But, more importantly, they are increasing safety and supporting economic development where they live. Purpose We move communities forward by creating holistic infrastructure solutions through valued partnerships with coworkers, clients, and colleagues.

Right now, our stormwater team is partnering with the City of Olathe on the design of the Briarwood Stormwater Improvements project. It includes replacing, upsizing, and improving a portion of the existing CMP storm sewer system to convey the 100-yr storm event and alleviate flooding in areas identified in the Preliminary Engineering Study (PES). The project includes a survey of the existing conditions, utility coordination, cost estimates, acquisition documentation, traffic control, the development of construction plans and specifications, assistance with bidding of the project for construction, and construction services. Once complete, it will reduce residential street flooding in the area.

Kendall Rees is a stormwater engineer at Affinis. She brought us along for what her average days look like here. She started by taking us to a project kickoff meeting in Atchison. She had the chance to walk the site, which includes a dam and reservoir at the upstream end. Then, she attended the Advanced Drainage Systems (ADS) stormwater symposium. While there, she learned about new and innovative products, techniques, and strategies used by local stormwater professionals. She also attended a screening of Cities of the Future, which was put on by ASCE. There was a great panel discussion featuring local industry leaders. They shared what the future Kansas City might look like. She wrapped up her week by completing a site visit to assess the on-site conditions of some new dams being built in Kansas. Luckily, this creek bed was dry! #GrowWithAffinis #SeeYourselfAtAffinis #MovingCommunitiesForward

The City of Olathe was having downstream flooding along Coffee Creek. To solve it, they decided to create a regional detention area near Lindenwood Dr. and Brougham Dr with funding assistance from the Johnson County Stormwater Management Program. In addition to managing the water, this project will also support future development in this rapidly changing area. https://loom.ly/X8rP1lg

The City of Olathe was facing capacity issues at the 159th Street and Blackbob intersection. The four-way stop was busy during typical peak hours and was even worse on weekends due to youth sports events in the area. Traffic was slow, and a new design was needed to increase capacity and improve safety. https://loom.ly/uGEbwRk

The Kansas City Downtown Airport has approximately 50 relief wells on site. From 2009 to 2023, our team partnered with the Kansas City Aviation Department (KCAD) to replace them as funding was available. We targeted wells that were no longer performing and those that had collapsed. Learn more about this project here: https://loom.ly/ptKzmcA

Over the last month, Affinis has been conducting panel discussions led by experts on certain topics. Our co-workers chose the topics of Business Development, Project Management, Leadership, and Design Best Practices. We had some great conversation, snacks, and learned a lot. These panel discussions were the start of our Mentor Program and will help pair mentors/protégés and spark conversation in those pairings. #SeeYourselfAtAffinis #GrowWithAffinis #MovingCommunitiesForward
