Post 2: Scoring Goals for the Community Community is at the heart of everything we do at AFC Ann Arbor. We see soccer as a powerful tool for uniting people and transforming neighborhoods, and our initiatives this season are designed to bring tangible benefits to those around us. One of our proudest efforts is our work with SOS Community Services. By providing essential household supplies and actively rehabilitating homes with the help of our players and staff and participating in holiday gift giving, we are directly improving living conditions for underserved community members. We also donated tickets to our games to all families supported by the Center. These projects go far beyond the game, fostering a spirit of solidarity and care that defines our club. We love connecting like-minded organizations. A shining example of this dedication is their collaboration with Gear Up For Good and the Peace Neighborhood Center. Gear Up For Good - a University of Michigan Student Organization focused on collecting and redistributing used sports equipment, partnered with our club to host a drive that gathered essential gear for the youth served by Peace Neighborhood Center. This initiative went beyond simply providing equipment; AFC Ann Arbor players and volunteers also ran soccer clinics at Peace Neighborhood Center, creating opportunities for local children to learn, play, and connect with the sport, while building lasting relationships and fostering a sense of community inclusion. Ann Arbor's vibrant community spirit is a constant source of inspiration for us. We believe in supporting local causes, and last December, we proudly participated in Food Gatherers ' Rockin' for the Hungry event. Our donation will help provide 10,000 meals to those in need - a small gesture to kick off the celebration of our club's 10th season! Additionally, our commitment to education remains strong. We’re working closely with Washtenaw Intermediate School District and the Ann Arbor PTO Council to support local schools and educational programs. Our club also donated equipment, and our players have visited Bishop Elementary and other schools in the Ann Arbor/Ypsi area. Through these partnerships, we’re ensuring that young people have the resources and opportunities they need to succeed—both on and off the field. Our mission goes far beyond scoring goals on the field—we’re committed to creating lasting social, environmental, and community impact. Every match and every initiative is an opportunity to drive meaningful change, both on and off the pitch. This season, our vision is already taking shape. We have partnered with A2Zero and the City of Ann Arbor Office of Sustainability and Innovation to ensure that all our uniforms and merchandise are made from recycled or organic fabrics through our team apparel partner, Diaza. In addition, we’re proud to continue our progress from the 2024 season by eliminating plastic bottles from our concessions and using only fully recyclable aluminum cans. These efforts are just one part of our broader commitment to sustainability. Our dedication extends into our community work as well. By joining forces with organizations like SOS Community Services, we’re providing essential household supplies and working alongside our players and staff to rehabilitate homes for underserved community members. The AFC Ann Arbor Foundation is excited to announce the launch of the David Hebestreit Coaching Scholarship Fund. https://lnkd.in/gfuT-YKM This initiative aims to encourage, and provide financial support to individuals from underrepresented communities to pursue soccer coaching licenses. The fund is named in honor of David Hebestreit, AFC Ann Arbor's original head coach. Coach Hebestreit was instrumental in building the foundation of the club, shaping its culture, and leading the team to its first-ever trophy. Beyond his coaching accolades, David was a true gentleman who cared deeply for his players and the community. He will be remembered for his kindness, his humor, and his unwavering belief in the power of sport to bring people together. "David Hebestreit was an extraordinary coach and an even better person," said Michal Lorenc, President of AFC Ann Arbor Foundation. "His legacy extends far beyond the soccer field. He was a mentor, a friend, and an inspiration to many. We are proud to launch this scholarship fund in his name to continue his work of building a more inclusive and welcoming soccer community." The David Hebestreit Coaching Scholarship Fund will provide financial assistance to individuals who face barriers to entry in the coaching profession, including but not limited to: - Women - People of color - Individuals from low-income backgrounds The scholarship will cover the costs of coaching courses, licensing fees, and other related expenses. We believe that it is essential to have a diverse pool of coaches who can serve as role models for young people.?By providing financial support to underrepresented communities, we can help create a more equitable and inclusive soccer environment. The AFC Ann Arbor Foundation is committed to supporting the broader development of soccer and fostering community engagement within the Ann Arbor region. The David Hebestreit Coaching Scholarship Fund is one of many initiatives that the Foundation is undertaking to achieve this goal.
