???? Big strides for orphans and vulnerable children in Ghana! Recently, AFFEO staff joined Ghanaian partners to lead and co-lead child welfare reform training sessions—and the response was incredible! ???? 28 high court judges received training on how the courts can help place children in loving families. ?? Leaders from the Department of Social Work were given a platform to speak during the judges’ training. ? Church groups and social service leaders attended a separate session on supporting child welfare reform. AFFEO partners report that Ghana is ahead of many developing countries in child welfare reform—a huge encouragement! Improving systems takes time, but every step forward means more children finding safe, loving families. ?? Your support is helping create impactful change. From "Orphan Kids" to "Family Kids" Part 2?? Orphans deal with major trauma, but rarely have anyone who can help them heal — a process that can be a lifelong journey. ?? Oksana and her friends in the orphanage longed for what the “family kids” had — someone to tuck them in at night, a hand to hold, a trusted and loving adult to walk through life with. The pain ran deep. ?? Fights often broke out between the two groups, driven by hurt and resentment. Being without a family wasn’t just about being alone—it shaped their entire identity. The past, present and future were all wrapped up in the existence of family. ???? But today, Oksana is no longer an “orphan kid.” She’s a family kid. From "Orphan Kids" to "Family Kids" Part 1?? What makes a child feel loved? ???? At Oksana’s orphanage in Ukraine, part of the orphanage grounds were used for summer camps. These camps hosted kids from loving homes a few weeks out of the year. The orphans located within the orphanage — on the orphanage side — called them “family kids.” Same ages. Same language. Same country. ?? But one heartbreaking difference. ?? The orphans had no one to call their own, and they were painfully aware of this. To them, “family kids” had everything—love, belonging, a future. Oksana felt the gap every single day. But her story didn’t end there. Stay tuned. ??
