#WomenInDeepTech Series by Xora Innovation Growing up on an airstrip in North Pole, Alaska, Alyssa Norris ?????? witnessed firsthand both the power of aviation and the environmental challenges tied to energy and emissions. This early exposure sparked a lifelong passion for sustainability, and she has dedicated her career to bridging the gap between cutting-edge technology and real-world impact. Today, Alyssa is the Director of Sustainability at Aether Fuels, which is seeking to enable a net zero world through sustainable liquid fuels. In this feature, she shares the defining moments that shaped her perspective, and what needs to happen next to accelerate the shift toward a more sustainable future. Here’s what she had to say: ?????? ?????? ???????? ?????????????? ???????? ???????? ???????? ??????????? My journey into deep tech was shaped by my upbringing and a lifelong passion for aviation and sustainability. I grew up on an airstrip in North Pole, Alaska, in a family deeply involved in general, military, and commercial aviation. My father was a pilot, and in Alaska—where aviation is essential for transportation—flying was a way of life. However, growing up in Interior Alaska, I also witnessed some of the worst air quality in the world, driven by emissions from heating, electricity generation, and transportation. That experience sparked my interest in air quality and the environmental impact of energy use. I pursued a degree in civil and environmental engineering at Washington State University—recently recognized as the world’s leading institution in sustainable aviation fuel research—and studied trans-Atlantic trade at the University of Bristol on a Fulbright Scholarship. My career has taken me across the U.S., working on energy and energy conservation projects for the Department of Energy and in the construction and energy services sectors, including at McKinstry. From LNG storage projects in Alaska to solar development in West Virginia and wastewater-to-renewable natural gas projects in Washington, I’ve been fortunate to work at the intersection of engineering, business development and policy. Now, I apply that experience to an industry I love—aviation—by supporting the development of sustainable aviation fuels and advancing deep-tech solutions that contribute to better air quality. For me, deep tech isn’t just about innovation; it’s about making meaningful progress toward a more sustainable future. Capgemini recently published a report on India's $3 billion SAF opportunity, highlighting a national incentive to develop a market for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The report cites India’s 3.2 million tons of Used Cooking Oil (UCO) as presenting “an intriguing opportunity”, noting that just 10% of this figure is currently being repurposed for biodiesel production. It seems the Indian government is supportive of biofuel, having already implemented the National Policy on Biofuels in 2018, seeking to "mainstream biofuels within the energy and transportation sectors", and the Sustainable Alternative towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT), with the goal to increase compressed biogas production. We're optimistic that the market for SAF will continue to take off, and nations will utilize the full range of feedstocks available to them, to help drive down its price and proliferate its use across the globe. But it will equally depend on how we collect waste feedstocks in order to make SAF production a more fruitful and effective process. We are proud to announce an MOU with Singapore Airlines (SIA) Group, creating a pathway to supply the airline with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) when we begin commercial production. The SIA Group intends to procure economical SAF produced by our breakthrough Aether Aurora? technology which utilizes waste carbon feedstocks. This proprietary method reduces plant capital costs, increases production efficiency and achieves higher SAF yields compared to existing methods. At the end of last year, Formula 1 released its inaugural impact report, revealing that logistics, specifically transporting equipment to events, accounts for 49% of its carbon footprint. Following this, the racing series pledged to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2030, building on SAF programs announced at the end of 2024 with its global partner, Qatar Airways and its global logistics partner, DHL. SAF demand is driven not only by airlines, but also by firms looking to lower their carbon footprints by using SAF for product or service transport, and logistics. Typically, businesses struggle with reducing their Scope 3 emissions, but with SAF, businesses, individuals and the planet can benefit. Formula 1 is embracing SAF as part of their decarbonization strategy and we are delighted to see a forward-thinking brand helping accelerate the progress of sustainable fuels. Research from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) reiterates the urgent need to scale SAF production to support the aviation sector's decarbonization goals. In a recent article in Sustainability Magazine, our CEO Conor Madigan highlights the importance of utilizing a variety of feedstock sources to fuel industry progress, stating: "A critical part of the solution is unlocking new forms of feedstock – waste carbon that can be economically turned into fuel and, importantly, is widely available enough to meet the huge demand of these industries.” While SAF production has been limited, it in fact doubled in 2024, and we are optimistic about production in 2025. While we are a long way off IATA’s targeted SAF supply, this upward trend marks the beginning of a paradigm shift for commercial aviation.
