Teamwork is the key to success! 💪 Project Manager Terrestrial Sensors recently held a leadership offsite at an aerostat facility in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. During the visit, PM TS leadership reviewed developments within its five product offices, including Product Director Aerostats, and toured the aerostat facility to witness the latest advances in aerostat: Tethered-Unmanned Aerial Systems and High-Altitude Balloons technology. PM TS supports our Army with state-of-the-art ground and tethered sensor capabilities that enable threat detection and support Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance, and identity management missions! Airbus Defence and Space and Aerostar (Aerostar International LLC) recently teamed up to test satellite backhaul from the stratosphere. Here's how they did it: 🔧 Engineering teams from both companies collaborated to modify satellite terminals, making them lighter and tougher to withstand harsh stratospheric conditions 🎈 These terminals were tested for 28 days over Sioux Falls to support ISR sensor applications 🎯 The testing showed the ability to relay high fidelity ISR data such as full motion video from anywhere in the world at real time -- a massive step towards mission readiness 💫 The testing also highlighted how HAPS can offer unmatched persistent sensing and communications, sustaining operations over target areas for weeks to months, at fraction of the cost of traditional assets. Airbus Defence and Space and Aerostar recently partnered to conduct a successful joint Internal Research and Development (IRAD) stratospheric test flight. The flight, on an Aerostar Thunderhead Stratospheric Balloon system, included and a series of satellite communication (satcom) terminals, adapted for stratospheric operations on Aerostar’s high altitude balloon systems as well as Airbus’s high-altitude fixed wing platform Zephyr.

250 DAYS OF FLIGHT! Aerostar is operating two Thunderhead high altitude balloons in the eastern Pacific that have flown for 250 and 225 days each. Aerostar launched Thunderhead HBAL676 on March 28, 2024 from New Mexico and Thunderhead HBAL684 on April 22, 2024 from Florida. Both Thunderheads are operating in the Pacific as duration demonstrations and testing Aerostar’s Thunderstorm software. Together they have traversed 115,000 nautical miles and operated in the airspace of 30 US States.  By leveraging directional wind patterns at high altitudes, Aerostar's Thunderhead Balloon Systems offer groundbreaking capabilities for navigation and persistence.
