I spoke at the Aviation ISAC summit about receiving vulnerability reports from researchers. The (rightly) safety-focussed culture in aviation doesn't always lend itself to hearing that one's baby is ugly! It doesn't have to be hard though: https://lnkd.in/eQK6xKVt

Want to learn more details about the Aerospace Village ADS-B badge we released at DEF CON 32? We have open sourced all of the hardware and software so welcome you to dig in and see the magic. https://lnkd.in/gRVJ6_MY There are also a couple of videos where Adam Batori and Robert Pafford give some insight into how this was pulled off. Here's the talk they gave at DC32 https://lnkd.in/gkbKgngV and Andrew Logan tagged along with them as well https://lnkd.in/gqGKDTAa While Adam and Robert were the wizards behind the badge, it definitely was a team effort. Daniel Allen, Ruben Munoz, P Hurley, Gray Kim, and Dan Ropp also had a hand in making this a reality.

Ken Munro is about to take off at BSides Bristol on Saturday with a talk on aviation security. ?? Can you really hack a plane? (Spoiler: It's more complicated than Hollywood makes it look.) What can we learn on the ground from vulnerabilities in the air? How do we stop potential security issues from taking flight? Ken will address the issues we've encountered with in-flight entertainment systems and electronic flight bags and the challenges we've faced in resolving them. Some of these issues have the potential to impact flight safety more than just ruin your in-flight movie selection. So buckle up and find out more ??https://lnkd.in/eR2n9Dtd #AviationSecurity #Cybersecurity #BSidesBristol #InFlightSafety #InfoSec #AerospaceTech #FlightSafety #SecurityAwareness"

WOW! The Aerospace Village Team did an amazing job on the badge they made for DEF CON 32! It's an all-in-one single board computer, software defined radio, and display with the necessary integration and software to turn it into a stand-alone aircraft tracker! It receives, decodes, and displays ADS-B information from aircraft within line-of-sight. They built a few different displays including a "flight board" with information about every aircraft seen and a "radar scope" mode that lets you see where the aircraft are relative to you. They also gave it the ability to connect to a WiFi network and provide the aircraft data it receives over standard network services. So, you can integrate it into your favorite aircraft spotting applications and services! Supplies were incredibly limited at DEF CON, but my understanding is that they will have more available soon.

Proud of the 17 students and 2 faculty from Cyber Intelligence and Security and Air Traffic Management programs of the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Prescott Campus, for organizing our aviation cyber CTF at DEF CON 32’s Aerospace Village! Their hard work and innovation showcased critical cybersecurity skills in the aviation domain. Thank you to Steve Luczynski, Matt Mayes, and other organizers of the Aerospace Village for this wonderful opportunity to showcase our CTF experience to the hundreds of attendees from all age groups and backgrounds! Thank you to Jeffrey Troy, Matthew Crandell, and others at Aviation ISAC for their continued strong support of our effort! This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for our students that has inspired them to soar higher! They also got to meet several of our alumni and industry partners. #DEFCON #AerospaceVillage #Aviation #Cybersecurity

Whew! DEF CON 32 is done, and the team has returned home safe and sound. ? These pictures cannot fully capture the energy behind the incredible team that came together to make all of this happen. These show a portion of the visitors who stopped by along with the activities, speakers, and workshops our partners and volunteers created. We're shifting over to Twitter during #DEFCON32, so come find us at @SecureAerospace for all the latest activities. But before we do, check out this big, beautiful 10,000 square foot space! This is the result of our incredible team of volunteers and outstanding partners who put so much work into bringing it all together. We'd be remiss if we did not recognize the impressive efforts and leadership of our core team working throughout the year to make this possible.
