Hear AeroShield Materials CEO Elise Strobach talk about our origin story, the science behind aerogels, and advice to founders on the latest episode of the EFI (Entrepreneurs for Impact) podcast!
?? I help climate CEOs grow (private peer groups & coaching) ?? I post on startups, finance, climate change ?? Investor, Founder, Professor, Coach, Podcaster, Newsletter Writer, "Monk"
??? Climate Tech Podcast ?? – This CEO turned her MIT PhD and "frozen smoke" into a company tackling a $40B problem and changing the face of real estate. (with super-efficient windows) Meet Elise Strobach, founder and CEO of AeroShield Materials. Elise and her team are unlocking the next generation of energy-efficient windows with a breakthrough material: silica aerogel. This isn’t just a fancy science term or a tech that NASA loves. It’s the world’s most transparent insulating material, reducing energy loss through windows by 50%. Their patent-pending material is 2-3x more insulating than standard gases used in windows today. That offers 3-5x quicker paybacks, up to 20% savings on heating and cooling costs, and a window that is 40% lighter and thinner than triple-paned windows. ?? Why Windows Matter 35% of energy loss in buildings occurs through windows, and Americans lose $40B per year in energy this way. Aeroshield’s silica aerogel, affectionately nicknamed "frozen smoke," is tackling this inefficiency head-on. It’s a super insulator that’s as light as it is powerful—probably because it's more than 95% air. ?? Scaling Up for Impact Backed by $25M in funding, Aeroshield is transitioning from its pilot phase to full-scale production next year. This funding enables the company to expand its team to more than 30 employees in a 12,000-square-foot facility. ?? Lessons from Elise Elise’s journey started with her PhD research at MIT, but it’s her resilience and focus that stand out. One gem from her: Ignore criticism from people whose advice you wouldn’t actively seek. Like Winston Churchill said, "You will never reach your destination if you stop and throw stones at every dog that barks." (But we love dogs, so put those stones down.) ??? ?????? ????????, ?????? ?????????? ???? ????????????????????! As AeroShield Materials begins producing aerogels from our new facility in Waltham, MA and planning for our APRA-E funded commercial demonstration plant ramps up (https://lnkd.in/gZsd6asT,) we have brought on three important hires to help support the next steps of our commercialization. Swapan Rahman joins AeroShield as VP Manufacturing. He brings an extensive background in chemical manufacturing and process improvement, including work at Praxair, Air Liquide, Bank of America, and Liberty Mutual. At AeroShield, he will be driving work on AeroShield’s commercial demonstration facility, improving quality and processes, and building out our manufacturing team. He is a Six Sigma Black Belt, and holds a B.S in Chemical Engineering and MBA, both from Northeastern. Amanda Stubbs-Perry joins AeroShield as Lead R&D Scientist. Amanda graduated from MIT with a PhD in Inorganic Chemistry, where she studied structure-function relationships in porous materials. She began her industrial career immediately upon graduation and is thrilled to begin her next chapter with the AeroShield team as an ASEE IPER Fellow. Coming from a global scale industry, she is well versed in all of the ways that a strong R&D team can support successful scale up and production of new commercial products. Amanda is excited to leverage her extensive experience with product design, development, and realization to help bring AeroShield technology from the R&D lab bench into homes across the country. Colin Hiscox joins AeroShield as a Test and Validation Engineer. He graduated with a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Most recently Colin worked as a Research Engineer within the Aerospace industry and will be supporting AeroShield’s Product team in developing integration methods for aerogels to create certified windows, doors, skylights, and more!
