A few years ago, merchants didn’t really care about unit economics in payments. “It’s the cost of doing business,” said operator after operator. The focus (for good reason) was top-line revenue. → How can I bring in more sales, customers, and transactions? Now, the focus has shifted to bottom-line revenue. → How can I lower costs, improve efficiency, and retain customers? Innovation in payments can successfully support this bottom-line strategy. Solutions like pay by bank move us from accepting → optimizing payments. But there’s more to moving money than lower cost per transaction. You’re also optimizing; - Approvals - Returns - Conversions - Fraud reduction - Cash flow efficiency - Payment reconciliation - Operational overhead - Settlement speed - Refund management - Customer trust and experience - Compliance - Security - Payment routing and decisioning - Multi-channel payment consistency - Vendor and partner payouts ...And plenty more that would put me over the character limit here. AI has been a double edged sword in payments. → Fraudsters use AI to develop more complex schemes. → Payments processors use AI to combat increasing fraud. But this "arms race" will yield far better, more intelligent payment systems. Like when chips were invented to stop counterfeit cards, but they made transactions faster and more convenient too. Machine learning for fraud reduction has been around for a while, but many systems just flag transactions as 'good' or 'bad' based on fixed criteria. There’s no learning involved. That’s the cause of the historically low acceptance rates associated with pay by bank. It’s also the reason Aeropay’s intelligent fraud models are so effective. AI helps us predict and immediately recognize anomalies and patterns in transaction data. The models effectively stop fraudulent transactions, without blocking good payments.
